Helicopter With 6 Onboard Crashes Near Uttarakhand’s Badrinath Route Amid Bad Weather

On Friday, October 30, 2026, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state, a helicopter that was carrying six individuals, including five passengers and a pilot, met with an accident in the vicinity of Chai village. The plane was flying from Badrinath Dham to Sahastradhara in Dehradun through the adverse weather conditions in the valley of Joshimath.
The aircraft belonged to Trans Bharat Aviation company with the call sign VT-HCX. According to the reports of the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), the aircraft departed from Badrinath at about 1:14 PM and got out of communication range.
Helicopter Crash Near Joshimath: What Happened?
The initial report suggested that the helicopter had crash-landed near the village of Chai, which is above the Joshimath region. Information regarding the missing helicopter was provided by authorities at 2:21 PM, after which time emergency services had been mobilized.
The helicopter wreck was later found in the vicinity of Joshimath. The number of people in the helicopter totaled six, including Captain Himanshu (pilot) and five passengers who were named as Prathapa, Arun, Shankar Gowda, Sudheer K, and H.S. Natraja.
It was reported that all six people were dead in this accident. Concerning this matter, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that a rescue operation had begun with the collaboration of the district administration, disaster management and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force).
Bad Weather and Orange Alert in Chamoli
The accident happened in difficult weather conditions prevailing in Uttarakhand’s hilly districts.
An orange alert was issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chamoli district on October 30 due to thunderstorms with lighting, hailstorm, and winds blowing at a speed of 40 to 50 kmph in some areas.
The weather agency had also predicted rains in the district with rain and snowfall in the area along the Badrinath-Joshimath road.
Poor visibility, snowfall, and strong winds have created worries regarding helicopter operations in the Himalayas.
Rescue Teams and Aviation Authorities Respond
In the aftermath of the disaster, members of Indian Army, Uttarakhand police, SDRF and ITBP were dispatched to the site of the accident.
As a safety measure, the entire fleet of Trans Bharat Aviation was grounded while more information was gathered.
This event will definitely bring the safety of helicopters in focus, especially along pilgrim trails where the weather conditions can change suddenly.
Helicopter Safety Concerns on Uttarakhand’s Pilgrimage Routes
Thousands of pilgrims come to Uttarakhand, where helicopters are required to transport people to religious sites at high altitudes, such as Badrinath and Kedarnath.
But the highly unpredictable Himalayan weather conditions, along with the tough terrain and lack of proper landing facilities, complicate such missions.
The recent accident has put the onus of implementing strict rules on flights based on weather conditions and strict safety measures.
