Mumbai AI Cameras Installed to Penalise Open Garbage Dumping and Maintain Urban Cleanliness

In order to prevent the open disposal of garbage and keep the streets of Mumbai clean, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed AI-based surveillance cameras. An AI-enabled surveillance camera has been set up for trial purposes in the Gajanan Vatika locality in the Mahim G/North ward of Mumbai.
This program will use live streaming and sound alerts to prevent people from littering in open areas. BMC will study the impact of this system before extending the use of this system at other garbage-prone areas in Mumbai.
How Will Mumbai’s AI Garbage Monitoring System Work?
This artificial intelligence-based camera senses the motion of those persons who come near the areas marked for garbage dumping. Upon detecting dumping, this device triggers a loudspeaker attached to the device, which delivers the audio warning message not to throw any garbage.
It also provides images that may aid civic administrators in identifying individuals who repeatedly break waste disposal norms.
As per the report, these images will be shared with the Solid Waste Management Department in wards for further investigation. This process is not automated, and there will be no automatic fines imposed; instead, municipal workers need to act on such violations.
As per the cleanliness framework for Mumbai by 2026, littering can invite a fine of ₹500.
BMC Plans to Expand AI Cameras Across Garbage Hotspots
Mahim’s Gajanan Vatika has been chosen as the pilot site since it is one of the sites having a repetitive problem of garbage dumping.
There are more than 280 garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) in Mumbai, where there is a tendency of waste deposition due to illegal garbage dumping from local citizens, passers-by, and commercial organizations.
BMC’s objective is to install AI-enabled cameras in these GVPs in a phased manner based on the pilot’s success. At some of the garbage dumping places, there has already been the installation of CCTV cameras for monitoring the repeated garbage dumping.
The civic organization has claimed elimination of more than 100 such garbage dumping points through improved garbage collection services.
Mumbai Generates Over 7,000 Tonnes of Waste Daily
The city produces roughly 7,000 to 7,200 metric tonnes of garbage on a daily basis. Dealing with the amount of garbage produced is quite challenging, especially in highly populated neighborhoods and commercial areas.
Garbage sensitive spots usually arise in locations where there are no adequate garbage collection services or no easily accessible disposal points for garbage.
The introduction of AI technology comes under a wider plan of cleaning the environment through CCTV cameras and more garbage collection.
Can AI Technology Improve Mumbai’s Cleanliness?
The advent of AI cameras represents the increasing reliance of the BMC on technology to solve civic problems that exist in their day-to-day functioning. Automatic warnings and surveillance by videos may prove to be effective in discouraging offenders from dumping garbage as well as helping the city officials locate areas where such civic offenses are commonly committed.
However, the mere implementation of technology cannot ensure that illegal dumping is stopped. Effective garbage pickup, proper disposal centers, transportation of waste, and the cooperation of the citizens are likely to play equally important roles in the process.
