Elon Musk Unveils Tesla Flying-Car Prototype, Targets Production by 2028

According to Elon Musk, a Tesla flying car prototype is out in the open, creating new uncertainties about the future of personal transport and how the company’s aspirations will go beyond the electric cars. The alleged revelation indicates that there is an estimated production schedule for 2028, but more needs to be said on the specification, certification, and manufacturing of the prototype.
Tesla has established itself through the manufacture of electric cars and the charging technologies that are associated with these automobiles. An advancement into the flying cars would mean that Tesla expands its vision, since the production of flying cars will encompass aviation and electric technologies.
The development of a flying car for mass commercialization would be quite challenging, taking into account various factors such as safety certification, flight controls, battery performance, cost of operations and regulation in the aviation industry.
Engineering Challenges Behind Flying Cars
Typically, flying cars are classified into two types: road vehicles that can switch to flying mode and the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) airplanes which were created mostly for flights.
The latter have been attracting much attention as electricity as fuel source may contribute to quiet and less environmentally damaging flying experience. There are a number of aerospace companies that develop eVTOL airplanes that could be used as air taxis or for emergency purposes.
In case Tesla chooses to build an electric flying car, its batteries will probably be an asset for the company. Nevertheless, there is much power needed to create lift during flying and batteries should give enough power without adding too much weight.
Safety is another problem that needs to be solved. Aircrafts should operate safely in any weather conditions, cope with busy air traffic and protect from any failure of the equipment.
Can Tesla Meet the 2028 Production Target?
Production in 2028 will be contingent on the completion of a number of milestones, such as prototype testing and engineering verification, manufacturing and preparation for the approval by relevant aviation authorities.
It is important to note that flying vehicles cannot go into mass production if they only pass the tests for meeting the road-safety standards. Depending on the vehicle’s design and intended purpose, the certification process might include rigorous checks of the vehicle’s strength, propulsion system, control and emergency systems.
The economics of production is another factor to be considered. Large manufacturing costs, inadequate charging/landing facilities and special maintenance requirements might limit the initial use of such technology to wealthy individuals or businesses.
Moreover, it should be understood what kind of flying vehicle is being created by Tesla.
What It Could Mean for Future Transportation
In the case of successful commercialization of flying vehicle, it could provide future passengers with alternative ways of emergency travel, connection between regions and chosen cities. However, in order to become widely spread, a flying vehicle should be affordable and reliable, as well as safe for aviation.
