Bhuvneshwar Kumar Earns Sudden India Call-Up as Cover for Arshdeep Singh Ahead of 5th T20I vs West Indies

Veteran Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has received a surprise call-up to the national T20I squad ahead of the fifth and final T20 International against the West Indies. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced his inclusion on October 16, 2026, after left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh sustained an injury to his bowling shoulder during the fourth match in Hyderabad.
The series decider is scheduled to take place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 17. With the five-match series level at 2-2, the contest will determine which team takes home the series victory.
The selection committee has added Bhuvneshwar as cover for Arshdeep, whose availability for the final match will depend on his recovery. The BCCI confirmed that a decision on Arshdeep’s participation would be made before the game.
International Comeback After a Four-Year Gap
This has been a significant step for Bhuvneshwar’s international cricket career. He has played for the country in a T20 International last in November 2022, and his inclusion can be seen as a chance for him to get back into the national squad after almost four years.
At 36 years old, he continues to prove his worth through his performance in domestic and IPL cricket. His experience, ability to control his line and length, and to swing the new ball makes him a useful choice for the India pace bowling attack.
Bhuvneshwar had already been included in the India team for the forthcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which is to start on October 22. The inclusion of the player in the decider against the West Indies team can give him an early chance to play for his country in international cricket.
But then, the selection of Bhuvneshwar in the squad does not mean that he will surely be included in the playing eleven.
India’s Bowling Attack Faces a Crucial Test
Arshdeep’s injury will pose a dilemma for India before their crucial game. This is because Arshdeep can add variations to the team’s bowling because of his left-arm angle and also the fact that he bowls in the death overs.
Bhuvneshwar is someone who can handle high-pressure situations. He has a knack of getting movement off the new ball and also has the ability to produce slow variations accurately. This may come in handy considering that the West Indies’ batting unit is quite aggressive.
India will require good bowling discipline since they have had an inconsistent series so far, with both sides winning two games each.
All Eyes on the Fifth T20I
The fifth T20I in Bengaluru becomes all the more important for the same reasons as well as due to the possibility of Bhuvneshwar being recalled.
The selection of Bhuvneshwar also becomes important in terms of the significance of experience as India gears up for international matches coming up soon. If included in the playing XI, the fast bowler can prove that he still has a lot to offer at this level.
Since the series trophy is at stake, the final Indian bowling combination may end up deciding the series result.
