NMC Relaxes MBBS Rules: Grants One Extra Attempt to Medical Students From 2019–20 Batch

Eligible students studying MBBS and admitted from the session of 2019-20 onward have been given an extra attempt to pass the First Professional MBBS Examination by the National Medical Commission (NMC). This is good news for students as now they will get an extra chance to pass the examination within the given number of attempts.
The relaxation has come due to problems faced by medical students due to the academic challenges, including that of the coronavirus outbreak and other such exceptional cases. It provides another attempt to eligible students to continue their studies in medicine without altering the examination process.
Who Can Benefit From the Additional Attempt?
According to the above decision, the students who fall into this category will get a chance for the fifth attempt of the First Professional MBBS Examination.
There are some conditions which apply to getting the extra chance. The students who have completed five attempts before, out of which one was due to a previous decision of NMC or order passed by the court, cannot apply for the extra chance.
Furthermore, those students who have taken more than four years to complete the First Professional MBBS course can also be considered, provided that they have not lost their admission status.
The conditions for being eligible are meant to help solve pending cases rather than creating a change in the rules permanently.
Ten-Year Limit for Completing MBBS Remains
Though the extra opportunity may assist some students who qualify, it does not change the total duration within which students should complete the MBBS program.
They must complete all the medical studies, including the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) within ten years of their admission into the course. The extra opportunity granted does not make the total period any longer.
It is important to note that passing the first professional exam is just but one requirement of the MBBS program. There is more that a student has to go through after the first test.
What Should Eligible Students Do?
Those who feel they deserve the additional attempt can approach their concerned medical college or university to determine whether they fit the criteria set by the NMC. Also, the candidate should know the exam schedule, application process, and documents required at the time of registration.
Individual assessment would be required in each case by the medical institutions on the basis of the conditions set by the NMC. Candidates should not assume that the provision of an extra attempt is for all candidates admitted from the 2019-2020 batch and beyond.
Academic relief for students facing problems
The said decision would mean additional hope for those students who had been struggling to clear their first professional examination. The fact that the completion deadline of the entire course remains the same provides an essential requirement of the MBBS course.
This policy indicates how difficult it is to strike a balance between academic performance and the situations faced by medical students. For the candidates who meet the required criteria, this might give a new chance for completing their MBBS course.
