Who Was Sarla Bhat? Why Yasin Malik Has Been Named the Main Accused After 36 Years
The case involving the killing of Sarla Bhat, a Kashmiri Pandit nurse, came back into the limelight after an unprecedented move by the SIA in filing a 737-page charge sheet against Yasin Malik who has been arrested in connection with the conspiracy to kidnap and kill her. Who Was Sarla Bhat?
Sarla Bhat was a 27-year-old Kashmiri Pandit who worked as a staff nurse at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura, Srinagar.
In April 1990, during a period of escalating militant activity in Kashmir, where many Kashmiri Pandits were fleeing from the Valley, she chose to keep working in the hospital despite the increased threat to her safety. Her choice is now an inspiration to many people.
What Happened in 1990?
As per the SIA charge sheet, Sarla Bhat was kidnapped in April 1990 while returning from work. After a few days, her body, which was shot dead, was found in Srinagar city along with an accusation of being a “mukhbir” (informant) against police. It is believed that this accusation was made up just as a pretext to kill her.
Thereafter, this case stayed unsolved for many years since Kashmir saw large militancy along with many terrorism cases without solution.
Why Has Yasin Malik Been Named Now?
The SIA reinitiated the probe in 2024 when the case was handed to it. After a new probe based on witnesses’ statements, forensic evidence, medical evidence, ballistics and documentation gathered over many years, the SIA identified Yasin Malik, who then worked with the proscribed group Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, as the alleged conspirator behind the conspiracy.
The SIA chargesheet identifies Khurshid Ahmad Chalkoo and other alleged members of the JKLF as well. It appears that Chalkoo had managed to escape to Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Why Did It Take 36 Years?
Investigating a crime at the peak of militancy was not easy. As per the SIA, investigators needed to find old witnesses, reconstruct the events using old records, conduct new forensic investigations, and collect evidence that had been scattered over several decades. The officials have stated that the chargesheet was perhaps the most comprehensive investigation into a legacy terror crime in Jammu and Kashmir.
Why Is This Case Considered Significant?
The researchers claim that this killing is not a one-off crime but a part of a bigger strategy of violence, which made the Kashmiri Pandits live in fear in 1990. The SIA claims that the purpose of these actions was to instill terror and to make the Kashmiri Pandits leave the Valley.
Due to the above circumstances, the case became a symbol of the violence that occurred back then and the long wait for justice.
What Happens Next?
The chargesheet has been submitted to a special court in Srinagar. The court will review the evidence submitted by the SIA and decide on the further course of action in the legal process.
Yasin Malik is already under life imprisonment in another terror funding case. The legal process will continue in the murder case of Sarla Bhat.
