India-Netherlands Trade Push: Piyush Goyal Visits Rotterdam Port to Strengthen Maritime Logistics

Piyush Goyal, India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister, paid a visit to the Port of Rotterdam located in Netherlands on October 25, 2026 to find ways to enhance maritime logistics, supply chain connectivity and trading between India and Europe. The visit is a part of the ongoing process initiated by the Indian government in order to intensify economic relations with the Netherlands and help Indian exporters in getting ready for the opportunities that await them in the European market.
He was accompanied by Boudewijn Siemons who is CEO of Rotterdam Port.
Rotterdam Port Visit Focuses on Logistics Modernisation
The Port of Rotterdam is the biggest seaport of Europe and is an entry point for foreign countries in order to conduct their business with Europe. This strategic importance of the Port of Rotterdam makes it essential for the Indian exporters to use it for expanding their business in the region.
During his visit, Goyal has stressed upon the scope of collaboration between the Rotterdam and the Indian ports in areas such as digitization of the cargo, faster custom clearance and vessel turnaround time.
Collaboration between the two can prove to be helpful in overcoming the problems related to logistics and making the process more efficient.
India also aims at multiplying its port capacity four times by 2047. The nation has already doubled its capacity in the past ten years as per the minister.
India-Netherlands Trade Ties Gain Momentum
The visit takes place amid attempts to increase business and investment between the two countries, especially with regards to the proposed India-European Union FTA (Free Trade Agreement).
The FTA would present more opportunities for Indian companies because they will have easier access to European markets. Good maritime facilities and better logistic connections can facilitate the transport of exports in a competitive manner. Another area where India and the Netherlands would cooperate is the field of renewable energy, green hydrogen, carbon management, and sustainable ports.
Sagarmala and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047
There have been many programs to modernize India’s port system including the Sagarmala program and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Cooperation with international port developers would be helpful for Indian agencies to introduce new logistics technology and better operations in ports.
What the Visit Means for Indian Exporters
Maritime cooperation may be advantageous for Indian manufacturers, agricultural exporters, and companies transporting products to Europe. Efficient handling of cargo and supply chain security would minimize delays and improve competitiveness.
The gains from these efforts would be realized provided that talks result in real cooperation, digitization and infrastructural upgrades.
Goyal’s visit to Rotterdam is an indication that India plans to utilize maritime logistics as a crucial element of its international trade policy.
