Union Education Minister Calls for Shift from Rote Learning at New CBSE Experience Centre

Union Education Minister, Pralhad Joshi, has suggested a move from rote learning and reliance on exam results, and he has emphasized the need to focus on conceptual learning, skill-based education and the interests of the students. These views were expressed by him on 27th October 2026 during the inauguration ceremony of the CBSE Experience Centre at Dwarka, New Delhi.
This centre is meant to increase interaction in learning process through linking bookish knowledge with the practical world.
Minister Criticises Marks-Driven Education System
This marks oriented approach was termed “marks wadi” approach by Joshi as the students focus more on memorising facts rather than grasping the concept.
Joshi also noted that the pressure put by parents on children to secure good marks might be limiting in terms of fostering curiosity and creativity among other skills. According to the minister, education must be geared towards helping students grasp what they have been taught and use their knowledge when needed.
Practical experience and problem-solving skills are important in equipping the youth for future challenges in academics and careers. The minister noted that the programme is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
CBSE Experience Centre Features 21 Interactive Exhibits
Spanning an area of 6,000 square feet at the CBSE Integrated Complex in Dwarka, the Experience Centre boasts of 21 exhibits divided into 12 major zones.
This centre takes the visitors on a journey of the development of education in India from traditional forms of education like gurukuls to modern classrooms and even e-learning.
It allows the students to learn about science topics, the history of Earth, new technologies and even future job prospects via its various exhibits and activities. The exhibits include ones like Career Explorer and Future of Professions which help the students get an insight into various career options available to them.
Some other features of the center include holographic meetings with various eminent personalities like Dr BR Ambedkar and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
Government Pushes Hands-On Science Education
Joshi emphasized the need for practical science learning, stating that the student should do observation and experimentation in science rather than depending solely on theoretical explanations in textbooks.
The concept of Atal Tinkering Labs was also mentioned by him; such labs foster innovation and experimentation by school-going children. As per the minister, there are about 10,000 such labs functioning in India at present, with another 50,000 to be established in the future.
Focus on Future Skills and Student Development
According to the CBSE Experience Center, the goal is to help students identify their areas of interest, gain confidence and realize the connection between classroom studies and the real world challenges.
However, there is still need for experts and educators to ensure that the experience learning does not stop at mere educational visits but includes teacher training, classroom activities and assessment systems changes so as to minimize the reliance on rote learning.
The center is a sign of improvement in school education as far as the long-term success depends on the way practical learning is incorporated into daily lessons in India.
