New Ujjwala Scheme Rules: How to Check If You Still Qualify for Subsidised LPG After the 4-Cylinder Limit Cut

Countless families registered under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme are trying to come to terms with the implications of the latest changes made to the subsidy.
The government has cut down the number of subsidized cylinders distributed annually under the scheme from nine to four, without any reduction in the amount of subsidy per cylinder being given, which remains at ₹300 per cylinder.
If you are one of the beneficiaries under the Ujjwala scheme, then the scheme doesn’t need to cease to exist. However, what you need to find out is whether your account under the scheme is properly connected or not.
What Has Changed Under the New Ujjwala Rules?
Under the modified policy, eligible PMUY families will be entitled to a subsidy of ₹300 per LPG cylinder, but this will be applicable only for the first four refills in the fiscal year.
Earlier, beneficiaries could claim subsidies for up to nine cylinders each year, while before this the program allowed up to twelve subsidised cylinders each year.
So, while the total subsidy amount hasn’t changed, there is a drastic reduction in the number of subsidized refills.
In most cases, it means that the maximum annual subsidy entitlement has come down from ₹2,700 to ₹1,200.
Who Still Qualifies for the LPG Subsidy?
There have been no substantial changes in the eligibility criteria of PMUY. If you have already availed yourself of an LPG connection under the Ujjwala program and continue to be a beneficiary, then you are eligible for the subsidy.
Nevertheless, you should keep your Direct Benefit Transfer link active and running. The subsidy will be directly transferred to the beneficiary’s account once the cylinder is bought.
How to Check If You Are Still Eligible
The easiest way to verify your PMUY subsidy eligibility is through the official PMUY portal. https://www.pmuy.gov.in
You can also contact your LPG distributor or call the national LPG helpline 1906 to confirm your subsidy status and DBT linkage.
When checking your account, ensure:
- Your LPG consumer number is active.
- Your Aadhaar is linked with the LPG account.
- Your bank account is linked for Direct Benefit Transfer.
- Your PMUY beneficiary status remains valid.
- Any mismatch between these records could delay or prevent subsidy payments.
Why Aadhaar and Bank Linking Matter More Than Ever
Beneficiaries often assume that the mere fact of having a Ujjwala connection would mean that they have been allotted subsidy credits.
But it may not necessarily be true.
The subsidy is credited electronically via the DBT mechanism, which means that both Aadhar seeding and bank account linkage are essential.
In case there is any deficiency or outdated linkage, the beneficiary will fail to get the subsidy, even if they fulfill all other criteria for subsidy.
It is especially recommended for parents and older beneficiaries to check these requirements before ordering their refill.
How Much Will You Save Now?
According to the new format, beneficiaries would be provided with ₹300 per cylinder for four refills every year.
This means that the annual benefit under subsidy would be up to ₹1,200 per family. Subsidies continue to be provided to the linked bank accounts after the purchase of the LPG refill.
Why Did the Government Reduce the Limit?
It is said that this decision was made based on an analysis of the average consumption of LPG by PMUY beneficiaries.
The government says that it will help them deal with the increasing cost burden associated with subsidies due to rising prices of LPG in the international market.
It is happening at a time when prices of LPG in the international market have been under some pressure.
What Should Beneficiaries Do Next?
The beneficiaries are advised to confirm their PMUY account information right away and not wait for the next refill booking to do so.
The benefits associated with checking whether the DBT process is underway, Aadhaar linkage confirmation, and whether bank account details have been updated will prevent any kind of financial inconvenience.
Beneficiaries are also advised to check subsidy payments made to their accounts via their passbooks or SMS notifications.

Conclusion
The Ujjwala program is going on, however, there has been a major change in the subsidy pattern.
Although the beneficiary will still get a ₹300 subsidy per cylinder, it will now be applicable for only four cylinders per year instead of nine. It has become very important for you to link your LPG account with your bank and Aadhaar card.
It is not necessary for you to apply for PMUY again, however, now you must make sure your DBT/LPG account details are correct.
