UGC Asks Universities to Integrate SWAYAM MOOCs into July 2026 Semester: What It Means for Students

Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) in India have been instructed by the University Grants Commission to incorporate approved SWAYAM MOOCs in their curriculum for the July 2026 semester. This step has been taken to bring about a formal inclusion of online courses in higher education programs instead of taking it as something extracurricular.
The order has required HEIs to select relevant courses on SWAYAM, correlate them with the curriculum, and then complete the process of credit transfer.
What Is SWAYAM?
SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is an initiative of the Government of India to provide MOOCs to students in engineering, management, humanities, science, law, teaching training, and various other subjects free of cost. This platform is in sync with the vision of the Ministry of Education and NEP 2020 of the Government of India.
Why Has UGC Issued This New Direction?
The most recent communication is a move away from merely persuading students to take up online courses to incorporating SWAYAM into the curriculum at universities.
UGC has directed universities to share the approved list of SWAYAM courses with their deans, heads of departments, and Nodal Officers of SWAYAM at universities. Universities are also required to conduct advisory committee meetings for identification of courses, mapping with existing courses, credit transfer, and registration of students.
What Does This Mean for Students?
It would open up possibilities for the learners like never before.
Rather than limiting themselves to subjects available in their own college, the learners would be able to take up some accredited courses online from nationally accredited colleges and earn credits on completion.
In this manner, they would have more freedom of choice in picking electives and developing interdisciplinary skills.
How Will Credit Transfer Work?
According to the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM) Regulations, the universities can permit their students to obtain credits for up to 40 percent of the courses available in a programme in a semester by way of the SWAYAM online courses.
The credits, however, will be credited only if the university has followed the regulations of the UGC and mapped the concerned SWAYAM courses to its curriculum.
Universities Can Now Conduct SWAYAM Exams
One additional key aspect of this directive is that the universities adopting the UGC examination structure for SWAYAM can themselves conduct end-term examinations in SWAYAM.
The intention is to make examinations easier for students but at the same time retain the facility of conducting examinations through agencies like NTA and NPTEL.
Which Courses Are Available?
Approved MOOCs by different national coordinators such as UGC, CEC, NPTEL, IGNOU, IIM Bangalore, AICTE, NITTTR, and Institutions of National Importance for the 2026 July semester by the Ministry of Education are now available.
Students need to confirm from the university or through the SWAYAM platform regarding the courses mapped to their program and their respective deadlines for registration.
Why This Matters Under NEP 2020
It is consistent with the NEP 2020 policy as it promotes learning flexibility, interdisciplinary study, academic mobility, and technology integration in higher education.
Through the inclusion of SWAYAM MOOCs in regular curriculum programs of universities, the UGC aims to give students more learning options while at the same time preserving academic standards through a formal credits system.
What Should Students Do Now?
It is important to see if the university has embraced the SWAYAM Credit policy and released the list of approved courses for your program.
It is equally vital to note down the registration deadlines released by the respective national coordinator and discuss with your department/SWAYAM University Nodal Officer before taking up an online course. Missing the deadline may force you to wait till the next semester for enrollment.
Conclusion
This recent directive by UGC represents yet another big leap forward towards incorporating digital education into traditional higher education institutions. As opposed to being used as additional learning tools, the universities will be expected to incorporate SWAYAM MOOCs as an integral part of their academic curriculum starting from the July 2026 semester.
The July 2026 semester is poised to become a milestone for Indian higher education system, giving the students greater opportunities of obtaining academic credits through quality online courses without leaving their academic institutions.
