SEBI Partners With Digital India BHASHINI to Expand Regional Language Services on Portals

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has collaborated with Digital India BHASHINI Division to increase access to investment awareness, financial information, and regulation-related services in regional Indian languages. The two organizations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 3, 2026, wherein the emphasis will be on making use of AI and language technology to minimize communication barriers for investors.
The agreement will enable individuals living in small towns, rural areas, and those who do not speak English to better understand financial information and avail SEBI’s digital services.
What Does the SEBI-BHASHINI Agreement Include?
As per the deal, SEBI would be making use of the technology framework provided by BHASHINI for the following four services:
- Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR): Transforming speech into text.
- Text-to-Speech (TTS): Converting text information into speech.
- Machine Translation: Converting financial and regulatory information into regional languages.
- Optical Character Recognition (OCR): Text extraction from images and scans.
Additionally, the inclusion of securities market jargon into BHASHINI’s language models is planned.
How Will Regional Language Services Help Investors?
Quite a large amount of financial information is comprised of terminologies that pertain to stock market, mutual fund, investment risk, and regulation. Investors who are not familiar with financial terminologies used in English might have some difficulties comprehending these terminologies before deciding to invest.
The joint effort hopes to bridge this issue through the examination of multilingual access to SEBI website, platform, awareness videos, and other relevant documents.
The workshop held parallel to the signing of the MoU also considered possible features such as voice assistance, multilingual application forms, conversation with AI, and real-time speech translation.
Such features would help first-time investors to easily comprehend market information.
Focus on Financial Inclusion in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities
SEBI Whole-time Member Sandip Pradhan stressed the need for dissemination of investment information in languages which investors feel comfortable in.
The initiative of SEBI, known as Project Jagrook – Samajh Se Investing Simple, is an effort towards increasing investors’ awareness and making investment-related decisions by using their knowledge.
The CEO of BHASHINI, Amitabh Nag, too stressed the need for technology in multiple languages for making financial information available.
As per the government statement, at present, BHASHINI provides support for 36 text languages and 23 voice languages of India.
When Will the New Services Become Available?
This memorandum of understanding became operational on November 3, 2026. However, the launch date of this project and which languages will be launched first have yet to be revealed by SEBI.
It depends on the technical implementation and the accuracy of the financial terminologies.
Through the signing of this MoU, SEBI has taken an important step in creating an inclusive financial regulatory environment for India.
