Kerala Launches Anti-Ragging Mobile App & 300 Youth Science Hubs Across Colleges

In this regard, Kerala has rolled out two such schemes which are dedicated towards increasing safety of the students and raising awareness of science in their educational institutions. The chief minister of the state, V D Satheesan, has initiated the scheme called the Siddharth Student Welfare mobile app and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Scientific Temper on 4 November 2026 at Government Women’s College, Thiruvananthapuram.
These schemes intend to give the students a platform wherein they can report the cases of harassment happening on campus and help them to think scientifically, and conduct research.
Siddharth App Allows Anonymous Ragging Complaints
This Siddharth Student Welfare App is a means for the students to raise complaints regarding ragging and related issues in the college, without the disclosure of their identities.
The app features an anonymous audio complaint facility that enables students to make their complaints in a confidential manner. The app will also be able to notify the relevant authority of any complaints pertaining to security.
This initiative is inspired by J S Sidharthan, a 20-year-old student of veterinary studies from Nedumangad who took his own life in February 2024 after facing allegations of ragging in the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Pookode, Wayanad.
Government Plans 300 Science Centres Across Kerala
Apart from the student welfare program, the state government has unveiled plans to set up 300 centers through the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Scientific Temper project.
Through the initiative led by the Kerala State Higher Education Council, around 15 lakh youngsters are expected to be touched through various programs on scientific temper, humanism and inquiry-based learning.
The centers would help the students think critically and differentiate between scientific facts and myths and superstitions.
Various online courses, study guides and short videos would be included in the project. An online course designed with the collaboration of the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT) has also been launched.
Siddharth Anti-Ragging Act Under Consideration
Roji M John, the Higher Education Minister, has said that the government is mulling over a draft of the proposed law on ragging called the Siddharth Anti Ragging Act.
This new law will offer a robust legal backing to tackle the issue of ragging and help form an anti-ragging commission in the state.
The Student Aspiration Survey has been launched by the government to know the aspirations of the students seeking higher education in Kerala.
Focus on Safer and More Progressive Campuses
Both these programs are indicative of the efforts by the state of Kerala to develop their students not only academically but also as individuals.
The anonymous complaint system can help students seek support from the institution, whereas science centers are expected to encourage rational thinking in students.
