Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Arrives in Tajikistan for SCO Heads of Government Meet
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has arrived in Tajikistan to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of Government meeting, highlighting India’s continued engagement with regional partners on security, economic cooperation and strategic stability.
This visit takes place amid efforts by India to build on its diplomatic ties in the region of Central Asia, which is very important in terms of its geostrategic location, energy supplies, and security threats. The geographical location of Tajikistan close to Afghanistan, as well as relations with other states in Central Asia, makes regional cooperation especially vital for India.

India-Tajikistan Relations
India and Tajikistan maintain diplomatic relations supported by cooperation in defence, healthcare, education and capacity building. Their partnership also reflects India’s broader efforts to deepen its engagement with Central Asian countries.
However, geographic factors and limited connectivity have limited the volume of trade when compared with India’s trade relations with certain other partner nations. Nonetheless, there is room for India and Kazakhstan to deepen their partnership in the fields of pharmaceuticals, IT, agriculture and education.

In Rajnath Singh’s participation in the SCO conference, India gets the opportunity to connect with regional nations on issues of security and strategic importance. These talks may further contribute to strengthening bilateral ties on the periphery of the conference.
