Qualcomm Unveils Next-Gen Snapdragon Flagship Chips With Built-In On-Device AI Features

Qualcomm has unveiled its next-generation flagship smartphone platforms, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, marking a major shift in the company’s mobile strategy toward on-device and agentic AI.
Announced at Snapdragon Summit on September 22, 2026, the two new platforms are built on a 2nm process and combine upgraded CPU and GPU performance with a redesigned Hexagon NPU focused on running increasingly sophisticated AI workloads directly on smartphones.
The company says the new chips are designed not simply to make phones faster, but to make them more capable of understanding context, processing information locally and carrying out multi-step tasks with less reliance on cloud computing.
Two New Flagship Snapdragon Chips Explained
The company is releasing two processors instead of just one premium flagship platform.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 comes as the top-tier processor for the most premium smartphones available on the market. In addition to that, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 features many improvements from the previous generation but is targeted towards a larger number of premium devices. These two processors feature 2nm technology and use Qualcomm’s proprietary Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU.
As Qualcomm notes, smartphones running on the new processors will be produced by HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi.
The Biggest Upgrade Is AI That Runs on the Phone
While the key point of difference is not just the jump down to 2nm but also the positioning of the chip around an era Qualcomm calls agentic AI.
Conventionally, smartphone AI will follow a particular command while agentic AI will be able to grasp the purpose behind a command and even complete multiple tasks in applications.
Qualcomm claims that their new platforms have been developed keeping in mind such experiences that will be available directly through their device. This will eventually make it possible for smartphones to perform certain tasks without sharing the personal details of the users to the remote servers.
The company calls this the transition from simple app running phones to personal intelligent assistants.
Why On-Device AI Matters
Directly running AI on a phone can provide some advantages.
First, there is an issue of privacy. In case when processing takes place locally, there is no need to send some personal data outside of the device.
Second, this approach increases responsiveness since there is no need for the phone to wait for a cloud server to process its request and provide an answer.
Third, such an AI system can work even without internet connection.
This new Qualcomm processor called Hexagon NPU has been designed specially for this kind of work. According to Qualcomm, it has a transformer-based Element Accelerator and 50% extra shared memory to ensure that the necessary AI data will be close to the processing part.
The Extreme Gen 6 Pushes Performance Further
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is the topmost chipset released by Qualcomm in this new range.
The Oryon CPU in the chip can work at speeds up to 5GHz, which Qualcomm claims as the first mobile CPU to achieve such a clock speed. It consists of two prime cores that can function at 5.0GHz and six performance cores that can go up to 4.0GHz.
Compared to the previous Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, Qualcomm claims 13% performance boost in CPU along with a 37% boost in CPU power efficiency in its Extreme variant. The company also claims a GPU performance increase of 44% and NPU performance speedup by 35%.
These are the comparisons done by Qualcomm itself, and the performance in the smartphone would depend on the manufacturer.
What Changes for Mobile Gaming?
Gamers are another major category of target users for these innovations.
Adreno GPU now introduces AI functionalities with the help of Adreno Neural Fusion, and the latter can be used for AI super resolution, frame generation, and image reconstruction.
Also, according to Qualcomm, the Extreme platform comes with 18 MB of Adreno High-Performance Memory, aimed at increasing efficiency while executing graphics tasks.
It is worth mentioning that for gamers, this implies that future high-end devices can use AI not only for background assistants but also while playing games.
Cameras Get a Major AI Upgrade
These chips come with excellent imaging technology as well.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip by Qualcomm supports up to 8K videos at 60 frames per second and 4K videos at 240 frames per second. The company also claims that the new generation can support three 64MP cameras and three 20-bit AI ISPs.
With the increasing use of AI processors in smartphones for image photography, from scene recognition and computational photography to video stabilization, Qualcomm aims to perform most of such processes within the phone itself.
This can enable the phone to edit images and videos in real-time without relying on cloud processing.
The Standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Is No Slouch
Even the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is getting an extensive upgrade.
According to Qualcomm, it offers up to 10% CPU performance enhancement, 35% GPU performance enhancement, and 14% NPU performance enhancement, as compared to the previous generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The company has also claimed an increased AI performance-per-watt by 20%, for multi-step agentic workloads.
This new AI platform also includes various features like AI-based camera processing, improved gaming responsiveness, and on-device agentic assistance.
This means that the new AI experience is not going to be restricted to the premium Android smartphones only.
Faster Connectivity Is Part of the Package
There have been some improvements in Qualcomm’s connectivity solutions too.
Both of these new platforms come with the company’s X105 5G Modem-RF solution, where the Extreme platform can deliver up to 14.8Gbps in downloads and 4.2Gbps in uploads.
Furthermore, there have been improvements in connectivity solutions as both platforms feature modern connectivity solutions such as Wi-Fi 8, Bluetooth 6.0, Ultra Wideband and Thread via the FastConnect 8800 solution.
It is worth mentioning that Qualcomm is also paying attention to satellite connectivity options.
What Does This Mean for Smartphone Buyers?
Only when the first commercial smartphones become available will consumers understand the importance of the new Snapdragon processors.
The most noticeable benefits are expected to be seen in AI assistants, photo capture, gaming, battery performance, and connectivity instead of benchmark scores alone.
Smartphones based on any of these processors would be able to understand the context better, do AI calculations locally, and run complex processes without forcing the user to open several applications manually.
But in reality, it will depend on how smartphone producers will utilize Qualcomm’s technology and how the Android operating system and specific AI services will utilize these features.
When Will Smartphones With Such Processors Appear?
Several large smartphone manufacturers, including OnePlus, Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO, Motorola, HONOR, iQOO, REDMI, and others, are going to release flagship smartphones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processors.
Conclusion
The latest line-up of Qualcomm’s chips reflects the changes in what the company thinks next-generation smartphones need to do.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips are not just faster processors but are rather an effort on Qualcomm’s part to incorporate AI in the core of the smartphone’s computing.
With personal AI agents, privacy-oriented computing, improved gaming experience through AI, photography and connectivity powered by AI, Qualcomm expects that next generation smartphones’ upgrade will be measured not only by the speed of its processor.
