Mumbai Rain Crisis: How Heavy Monsoon Showers Are Disrupting Flights, Rail and Road Travel

Mumbai is facing one of its worst monsoons of the season with heavy rains leading to extensive disruption to transport systems via air, rail, and roads. The Indian Meteorological Department has raised a Red Alert for Mumbai and adjoining areas regarding the forecast of very heavy rains coupled with wind. It has advised people not to go out for any non-essential purpose due to the flood situation.
Flights Face Delays, Diversions and Cancellations
Rain, poor visibility, and strong winds have caused serious disruptions at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
According to sources, there have been cancellations of numerous flights, delays of hundreds of flights, and diversion of many flights bound for Mumbai due to bad weather. Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet have put out travel warnings to the effect that passengers should check their flight schedules prior to heading to the airport.
It is recommended that passengers go to the airport only after updating their schedules.
Rail Services Disrupted by Landslides and Waterlogging
Railways have not remained untouched by the severe monsoons. Disruption in train services from Mumbai to Pune occurred due to landslides along the Karjat-Lonavala ghat area, and the authorities had to stop several long-distance trains. Moreover, waterlogged tracks and foggy conditions are adding more troubles for railways to operate their trains smoothly.
Although most of the suburban local train services are working, they are facing problems in the form of delays and crowding due to bad weather conditions.
Roads Across Mumbai Witness Severe Traffic Congestion
Road transport is one of the most difficult aspects amidst the current spell of rains. Some of the low-lying areas are still waterlogged, which is causing heavy traffic and slow-moving cars around the city. The rains have caused several landslides on the routes from Mumbai to Pune, thus causing a disruption in travel through the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the older route between both cities. The police have advised people not to undertake any unnecessary travel due to these circumstances.
Red Alert Issued as Rainfall Continues
According to IMD, there is an expected occurrence of rain showers ranging from heavy to very heavy along with wind speeds ranging from 60 to 70 km/h in areas such as Mumbai, Mumbai suburban, Thane and Raigad in the coming hours. The red alert continues to be in effect.
Disaster management teams have been deployed by government authorities while schools and colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan region have been shut down as a preventive measure.
Advisory for Commuters
The authorities are asking people to refrain from unnecessary travel till the weather improves.
People who have flights and trains scheduled are asked to confirm the status of their flights/trains online before leaving for the airport/railway station. People driving are warned not to take routes that can get flooded, experience landslides, or become waterlogged.
