Indore Water Contamination Investigation Reveals 30-Year-Old Urban Design Flaw Following Deaths

The Indore water pollution case study has shown that a number of infrastructure and administrative problems existing for over three decades have been responsible for the water tragedy at Bhagirathpura. A judicial committee set up by the High Court of Madhya Pradesh stated that the faulty piping system and negligence in dealing with complaints have led to the contamination of the municipal water supply system.
What Caused the Indore Water Contamination?
As per the findings by the commission, the cause of the problem can be traced back to the construction of water and sewerage systems in the 1990s and early 2000s. The sewerage system was installed from 1990 to 1995 while some parts of the water pipeline were constructed from 1999 to 2004.
The investigation revealed that the water and sewage pipelines were constructed very close to each other and at times ran parallel to each other without any separation. With time, the aging pipeline systems cracked and leaked, thus creating an entry way for sewage to mix with the water supply.
Deaths Expose Decades of Civic Failures
Water contamination problem in Bhagirathpura occurred in December 2025 as a result of the residents’ complaints about the bad smell of the water and subsequent outbreaks of vomits and diarrhoea.
The court investigation revealed that the cause of the accident did not lie in one particular mistake but in the chain of mistakes over many years. The committee established that there were various officials who were responsible for the failures.
Moreover, the lab examination found that the water supplied contained such dangerous substances as E. coli, faecal coliform and Vibrio cholerae.
Indore Introduces Water Safety Measures
However, following the incident, certain modifications were made in the city’s water management system. This included improving the quality checks at the treatment centers, distribution centers, and the end-user location. The government has also started working on segregating the drinking-water pipeline systems from the sewage pipeline systems and detecting underground leaks through technology.
The investigation of the water contamination issue in Indore has thus exposed an important aspect of urban planning: that old and outdated infrastructure can pose a significant health threat even in the most hygienic and sanitary cities.
