India and US Conclude Core Bilateral Trade Pact Talks, Finalising First Tranche: Piyush Goyal

“India and the U.S. have completed almost all negotiations regarding their bilateral trade agreement, and we are just refining the details,” Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said in The Hague on October 26, 2026. The announcement comes as a step towards the completion of the first package of a trade agreement that seeks to enhance economic relations between the two nations.
The minister made the announcement while addressing the India-Netherlands Business Forum in The Hague. He added that there has been great progress made in the negotiations, and the details of the deal still remain to be worked out.
India-US Trade Deal: What Has Been Finalised?
India and the US have established a framework regarding the initial stage of the trade deal between the two countries in February 2026. Later changes in the US tariff environment prompted more negotiations between the two parties.
Beforehand, on October 15, Goyal had stated that the first batch has already been finalised and is now under the process of legalisation. Moreover, he also stressed the fact that India aims at getting a comparable or competitive edge over other similar countries before implementing the deal.
The ongoing agenda is still about ironing out the details of the deal and settling down the pending issues.
Tariffs and Market Access Remain Key Issues
In the suggested arrangement, there is an effort to enhance market access and resolve issues related to tariffs and to create more trade opportunities for companies in both the countries.
India is seeking favorable treatment regarding tariffs on its exports to the US in order to stay competitive in comparison with manufacturing countries like Vietnam and others in Asia.
These discussions also touch upon larger issues like agriculture products, industrial products, and regulatory issues. Any changes in tariffs and market access will have an impact on exporters and manufacturers.
What Does the Trade Pact Mean for India?
The United States continues to be one of India’s most vital trading partners. Such an agreement may increase the level of predictability for business people, encourage investment and offer Indian exporters chances in various industries.
Furthermore, Goyal pointed out the increasing involvement of India into international trade, emphasizing the fact that nine free trade agreements have already been signed during the past four-and-a-half years.
Further actions will depend on the completion of all negotiations, legal documentation and receiving all required approvals. Although the latest news reveal considerable achievements, businesses should wait for the official announcement to learn about the advantages and timeline of the agreement.
