Renowned Kannada Poet HSV Dies at 80 in Bengaluru

Prominent poet and playwright H S Venkatesha Murthy, best known as HSV, died at a hospital in Bengaluru on Friday, causing deep sorrow among Kannada writers. For the past three years, the author’s health has been struggling because of advanced age. Murthy produced a literary legacy that covered three decades in Kannada literature. He was a teacher, poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, translator, and critic throughout his career. He taught faithful psychology classes at St. Joseph’s College for over thirty years, encouraging numerous students.

Many people came to admire the veteran writer’s poetry by hearing it in Bhavageethe, which connects Kannada poetry with music. The emotional depth and cultural connection in his verses made them popular at sugama sangeeta performances across the whole state of Karnataka. In addition to music, Murthy also wrote popular songs for movies such as ‘Chinnari Mutha’, ‘America America’, and ‘Kirik Party’. The Kannada stage benefited greatly from his works ‘Uriya Uyyale’, ‘Agnivarna’, and ‘Manthare’.Throughout his career, the literary writer was awarded numerous honors and also served as president of the 85th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in Kalaburagi. ‘Kannadadalli Kathana Kavanagalu’ was the focus of Ashok Kumar Dogra’s doctoral research, which raised his standing as a scholar. The Deputy Chief Minister stated that Muruganantham was akin to a poet of emotions and had greatly enriched the Kannada literary scene.
