CERT-In and Election Commission Move to Patch Critical Vulnerabilities in ECINET App and Voter Portals

The Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) are attempting to resolve security weaknesses which have been allegedly found in the ECINET app and voter service portal. A security expert claimed that some of the security weaknesses were brought to the attention of both institutions back in July 2026 and some of them involved the exposure of contact details of the officials and tampering with the data.
What Are the ECINET Security Concerns?
ECINET is the main digital portal of the Election Commission, which facilitates various election services. ECINET enables citizens to access voter registration, electoral roll details, polling station information and other related election information, while election officers get access to administrative services based on their roles.
As per the claims of the researcher quoted in some latest reports, certain vulnerabilities in the system may lead to risks such as exposure of sensitive data and integrity of data. CERT-In has confirmed the fact that at least one vulnerability has been corrected, but the researcher said some other vulnerabilities are still not fixed.
Why ECINET Cybersecurity Matters
Security for ECINET and voter portals becomes an issue of utmost importance since these portals provide vital election services and deal with the information related to voters and election management processes.
ECINET has turned out to be one of the core components of the Indian election technological system. The Election Commission announced in May 2026 that the portal has registered 10 crore downloads and had more than 98.3 crore hits during polling days in 2026. Besides, its cybersecurity measures have been able to fight 68 lakh malicious hits against critical election portals during the counting day.
ECI Reviews ECINET Infrastructure
The Election Commission has also come out with ways to evaluate and enhance ECINET. A committee under the leadership of the Senior Deputy Election Commissioner with the participation of an independent expert from any IIT or IIIT has been constituted to carry out such an evaluation. According to ECI, several enhancements have already been made as a result of suggestions from the state-level election officers.
These new developments highlight the significance of cybersecurity for the digital infrastructure of elections in India.
