India Is Claude’s No. 2 Market: Who Uses Anthropic’s AI and Why It Matters

India has moved from being a promising market for AI technology to being an essential testbed for how AI is applied in practice. This can be seen from the data regarding Anthropic’s Claude platform, where India is the second largest market in the world for Claude after the US. According to Anthropic itself, India constitutes 5.8% of the total global usage of the Claude.ai technology in conversations tracked in November 2025.
However, what is even more telling is not just the millions of Indians using Claude but their usage. According to research carried out by Anthropic, the Indian users of Claude are disproportionately found among software developers, engineers, mathematicians, educators and other professions requiring highly specialized knowledge. Nearly half of all usage of Claude in India comes from computer and math-oriented professions like application creation, system upgrades and production software development.
India has become essential for Anthropic for reasons different from its sheer size.
Why India Has Become Claude’s No. 2 Market
One reason India’s ranking is what it is is its huge population and technology labor force. However, Anthropic’s data implies that something else is going on beneath the surface.
According to the India Country Brief prepared by Anthropic, India represented 5.8% of the total use of Claude.ai, second only to the US. But India has an underwhelming per-capita use of the application, placing it at 101 out of 116 countries with sufficient data. What’s significant about this detail is that it demonstrates that India is ranked number two on the list thanks to both its massive population and concentrated use by certain professional groups.
What this means is that Claude is still not yet widely used in India. The concentrated use of the application is by those already in technological spaces.
This fact is actually why the market is valuable strategically to Anthropic.
Developers Are at the Centre of India’s Claude Boom
The most obvious pattern from the Anthropic study is the prevalence of software-related activities.
According to Anthropic, 45.2% of AI usage in India is associated with software-related activities, the largest percentage in all countries covered in the Anthropic report on India in February 2026. Software-related activities encompass coding and debugging software, developing applications, modernization of existing processes, and software development.
India’s reputation as one of the leading centers of global technology and IT services plays a role here.
For Indian programmers, Claude is not just a chatbot which answers their questions. It is also a coding helper, debugging companion, documentation utility, research tool, and, increasingly, an agentive software development system.
It makes a difference. The potential value of AI becomes much more significant once it is integrated into actual work processes.
Indian Professionals Are Using AI for Harder Tasks
As per Anthropic’s data, yet another major difference between India and the global average is visible.
Specifically, it was found that Indian workers took an average of 14.8 minutes to finish tasks with AI that would have taken them around 3.8 hours in total to complete – 15 times faster. On a global level, these numbers are 15.4 minutes and 3.1 hours, or 12x.
These data do not imply that Indian employees are 15 times more productive due to the use of Claude. Rather, these numbers suggest that Claude is used for tasks which would have required considerable amounts of human labor.
This is a significant difference.
Apparently, Indians are using AI to solve relatively complex tasks and reducing the amount of time needed to accomplish them.
India’s IT Industry Gives Claude a Natural User Base
The giant Indian software and services industry presents a natural environment for AI adoption at Anthropic.
Developers in tech companies, IT service firms, startups, and global companies function within workflows that revolve around coding, testing, documentation, and system maintenance.
Tools like Claude fit well into these needs.
Indeed, Anthropic has recognized the importance of such a market itself. The opening of the company’s Bengaluru office in February 2026 was marked by the company pointing out India as a place with a developer community doing some of the most technically advanced AI work that Anthropic sees anywhere.
The partnership between Anthropic and Infosys for building enterprise AI solutions related to telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, and software development using the Claude AI system along with Claude Code and Infosys Topaz also indicates this trend.
It shows that Claude’s growth in India is increasingly shifting from developers to enterprises.
Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi Are Driving Adoption
Usage of Claude in India is similarly confined to certain regions.
According to Anthropic’s study, these states contributed to more than half of Claude usage in India. This closely parallels the geographic distribution of technology industry and economic centers in India.
The relevance of Karnataka is especially important due to the fact that Bangalore is one of the largest technology centers in the world.
Presence of Tamil Nadu can be attributed to the technological and engineering environment of Chennai. The same is true about Maharashtra due to Mumbai and Pune’s large corporate and technological centers.
This shows how Claude usage correlates with the current geography of high-knowledge value work.
Students and Educators Are Another Important User Group
There have been developments with Claude in India beyond the developers’ circles.
According to Anthropic’s study, education and coursework make up a significant part of Claude use in India. Coursework made 20.9% of the usage in India, just slightly ahead of the world average of 19.3%. India also featured in the list of top 10% countries in terms of usage of AI in education from Anthropic’s side.
This provides yet another potentially important avenue of development.
Students could use AI for concept explanation, programming help, research and writing of papers. Educators could use AI for class preparation, curriculum creation and adaptation to various levels of understanding.
However, the increased use of AI in educational processes brings certain concerns on integrity, dependency and necessity to teach how to verify the information generated by artificial intelligence.
Enterprise Adoption Could Be the Next Big Phase
The most important trend in India could well be the move from individual use to enterprise use.
Anthropic made the appointment of Irina Ghose as its India managing director in January 2026 with considerable experience in enterprise tech and AI from her time at Microsoft India. This was followed by the opening of its Bengaluru office and partnerships in enterprise, education and agriculture.
There have also been reports by Anthropic that its revenue run rate in India has doubled within six months before February 2026. Thus, the significance of India is not only about the volumes but also its business relevance for the company.
The next step might involve embedding Claude within corporate applications, customer service and knowledge bases and regulated industries.
Why Claude’s Growth Matters for India’s IT Workforce
The fame of Claude goes further than Anthropic’s.
The Indian IT services sector consists of many professionals who do their job by developing, testing, documenting, analyzing and automating the business processes. The role of artificial intelligence here is that with the help of these tools, one can automate the process of doing repetitive tasks and focus more on architecture, decisions, and problem solving.
Anthropic made an emphasis on the ability of Claude Code to speed up the IT-services sector of India, which is export-oriented.
However, everything depends on the way these systems are used. It can either complement workers’ efforts and increase the productivity of labor or change the required skills.
Therefore, the situation in India should be of interest to the whole world’s IT-services sector.
The Bigger Opportunity Is Beyond Software
While all of this attention has been paid to software, Anthropic itself has highlighted a significant gap in opportunities that include increasing AI usage in places other than India’s tech centers and technical talent pool.
Should Claude usage be limited to developers and wealthy city dwellers, the economic influence of Claude will be significantly smaller than its stated market ranking.
This task, therefore, is to move from heavy adoption to widespread adoption.
It might involve bringing AI into healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing, public services, and small businesses while being mindful of India’s diverse language, economic, and digital landscape.
Anthropic has acknowledged that their strategy for India involves education, healthcare, and agriculture besides business partnerships.
What India’s Claude Adoption Says About the AI Race
Being the second-biggest market after the US makes India a very interesting example in terms of how the AI race develops worldwide.
While the US still retains its place as the largest market, India becomes a very interesting environment for implementation of the technologically advanced AI. The reason for that lies in a combination of a massive population size, a massive pool of IT professionals, growing digital infrastructure and a big number of companies which already use cloud-based software.
All of that results in creating an environment where AI models can become operational very fast.
Claude’s development demonstrates that the winner of the AI race won’t necessarily have the best benchmark results; it all comes down to the adoption of these AI models by companies and professionals.
India seems to be doing just that.

Conclusion
But India being Claude’s No. 2 market in terms of usage is only one of the key points here; the important information is to be found behind those numbers.
According to Anthropic’s data, Indian users tend to use Claude for software development, engineering, educational and professional activities in a greater degree than other users. Being a leader in the IT sector, India provides Anthropic with an excellent developer pool, while enterprise partnership can help it spread its tool further throughout the economy.
Still, a relatively low per capita adoption of AI indicates that the story of Claude in India is only partially fulfilled, and the greatest potential may now lie in bringing advanced AI to people who do not have anything to do with the Indian tech centers.
India is thus more than just a large market for Anthropic, but rather an example of how the massive IT workforce uses AI not as just another chatbot, but as a tool for their work.
