MoD Inks ₹53,866 Crore Mega Contract for 8 Next-Generation Naval Corvettes

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has inked contracts totaling ₹53,866.50 crore with the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) to build eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) for the Indian Navy. These contracts were inked on November 2, 2026, under the aegis of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at Kartavya Bhawan-2, New Delhi.
According to the terms of the contract, the Kolkata based GRSE would build five corvettes and GSL would manufacture the other three corvettes.
Navy to Design Warships Indigenously
It is a landmark project in the context of the ship building programme for the navy of India. It will be for the first time that the Indian Navy will design the warship indigenously, and the construction of the ship will be entrusted to DPSUs chosen through the bidding process.
The corvettes will incorporate state-of-the-art missile, weapon, and sensor systems. With the help of these technologies, they will be able to operate in air, surface, and underwater domains.
They will be able to undertake various activities such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, coastal defense, maritime surveillance, and littoral combat. Moreover, they will be helpful in securing crucial trade routes of India and ensuring its presence in strategically significant water bodies.
GRSE and Goa Shipyard Share Construction Responsibilities
GRSE will get the work on five vessels, whereas GSL will construct the remaining three vessels. Both of these shipyards are known defence PSUs with the capability to build naval ships.
The healthy competition in allocating the job is believed to bring out more efficiency and improve the shipbuilding capacity of India.
Moreover, this project will see the involvement of some private shipyards, equipment suppliers, industries, and MSMEs.
Project Expected to Generate Employment
As per the Ministry of Defence, the building of these eight corvettes is likely to provide employment of about 72 lakh person days at the shipyards over the coming decade.
Furthermore, employment of about 460 lakh person days is envisaged in the allied industries and MSME sector over the coming decade.
The project will also encourage the use of indigenous materials, equipment, and technology in the country.
Boost to India’s Maritime Security
This contract is one of the many components of India’s attempt to make its army modern.
The future corvettes, after being manufactured, will increase the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy in coastal as well as open waters. The project will also contribute to the initiatives taken by the Indian Government such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
