Kashi Ganga Corridor: Route Map, Project Details and What It Means for Varanasi’s Future

The Union Cabinet has sanctioned the Kashi Ganga Corridor, which is one of the most ambitious urban infrastructure projects that have been envisioned in Varanasi in recent times. Together with the Varuna Corridor project, both these projects are likely to make substantial reductions in congestion levels, enhance connectivity, and transform mobility within the oldest city in India that is very busy. The combined investments required for these two projects amount to about ₹25,446 crore.
What Is the Kashi Ganga Corridor?
The Ganga Corridor is an elevated highway corridor spanning a length of 46.04 kilometres along the banks of the River Ganga in Varanasi.
As per the sanctioned plan for the Ganga Corridor, it is supposed to be mostly an elevated road of 6 lanes which links NH-19 with the Varanasi Ring Road. This project is planned to provide better connectivity between the important highways and different areas of the city without entering into the busy city roads.
In contrast to the already existing Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor which is meant for the movement of pilgrims from the temple to ghats, the Ganga Corridor is a transport infrastructure project.
Route Map and Alignment
However, since the final design of the road will be done during the implementation phase, the approved route will be roughly in line with the bank of River Ganga and will connect NH-19 with Ring Road through an elevated highway.
This has been planned to provide easy passage to the vehicle traffic that will no longer be forced to pass through the narrow roads of the city and will help in getting into and out of the city at several entry-exit points.
Why Was the Project Needed?
Every year, the city attracts millions of devotees and tourists to its vicinity. Added to this is the increasing urban development and increase in automobile ownership, making traffic congestion a major problem for Varanasi.
Movement from one part of the city to another moves at an average speed of 20 km per hour during peak hours. The new skyways have been built to facilitate a speed of 100 km per hour, providing a detour to city streets.
It will greatly enhance not just commuting but also logistics and other essential things.
How Will It Benefit Pilgrims and Tourists?
Varanasi happens to be among the most significant religious sites in India that attracts pilgrims all year round.
Traffic congestion is quite common along the access roads linking the temples, ghats, railway stations, and highways that connect Varanasi City.
Through the use of elevated roadways, it is believed that local traffic congestion will be reduced, thus easing movement for both residents and tourists.
This plan will also contribute to other projects being carried out in the city, such as the Ring Road Project.
Economic Impact on Varanasi
Apart from decreasing traffic congestion, the Kashi Ganga Corridor is poised to promote economic activity in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Improved connectivity through highways helps in decreasing transportation costs, enhances the flow of goods, and promotes business development in areas that are well connected.
Such businesses can include those related to tourism, hotels, logistics, retail sector, and property development.
There are also expectations that improved connectivity will help in strengthening Varanasi’s position as an economic and cultural center of the region.
How Is It Different From the Varuna Corridor?
The Cabinet has approved two different projects simultaneously.
The Varuna Corridor would run through the Varuna river, connecting a new part of the city; on the other hand, the Kashi Ganga Corridor runs along the river bank of the Ganga River connecting NH-19 to the Ring Road.
Both corridors have been developed together to make an efficient bypass system around Varanasi.
What Happens Next?
After the approval by the cabinet, the project shall go through the various phases of implementation, which include engineering design, and construction where necessary.
Due to its size and complexity, the construction process is likely to be carried out in various phases before becoming fully operational.
Upon completion, the corridor will become one of the most important transport infrastructural projects of Varanasi in recent times.
Conclusion
Kashi Ganga Corridor is not merely a new highway, but a step towards developing the transport system of Varanasi while taking into account the increasing significance of this town on many levels: religious, cultural, and economic.
In case the plan is successfully put into action, it would enable people traveling from one point to another in the city to save precious minutes while moving around more conveniently.
It is an attempt by the developers of Kashi Ganga Corridor to blend heritage with development in order to make one of the oldest cities of India ready to face its future.
