His score of 239.6 was outstanding, leading him to surpass his own teammate, Arjun Cheema, who won the silver medal. This individual victory has also earned Varun Tomar an Olympic quota place for India, which is a big step towards the Paris Olympics.
This event is crucial as it offers 16 quota places for the upcoming Paris Olympics. The men’s and women’s 10m air pistol events are particularly significant as they provide four quota places, with a maximum of three quotas for Indian shooters.
India’s shooters are performing exceptionally, aiming to surpass their previous record of 15 Olympic quotas achieved before the Tokyo Olympics.
The Indian women’s team, consisting of Esha Singh, Rhythm Sangwan, and Surbhi Rao, are also competing in the women’s 10m air pistol event, with hopes of securing a Paris quota for India.
India has already secured 13 Olympic quota places in shooting across various disciplines. This includes eight in rifle, three in pistol, and two in shotgun categories. The achievement in Jakarta adds to India’s growing list of accomplishments in shooting, along with the talent and hard work of Indian shooters.
The Asian Olympic Qualifiers, doubling as the 2024 Asia Shooting Championship, are a platform for 385 athletes from 26 countries, competing for 256 medals and the coveted Olympic quotas.
India’s performance in Jakarta is a strong indicator of the country’s rising stature in the world of shooting sports.
