India Attracts Students from 173 Countries: International Enrolment Rises 19% as Karnataka Emerges as Top Study Destination

India is establishing itself as a world-class destination for higher education, with government statistics now indicating a considerable increase in the number of foreign students opting for Indian higher educational institutions.
As per the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24, India hosted 58,134 foreign students from 173 nations, which indicates an 18.9% increase from the last five years. The statistics point to India’s ongoing attempts towards internationalisation of higher education through policies, academic collaborations, and programs like Study in India and NEP 2020.
Although the growth is indicative of India’s growing popularity amongst foreign students, experts feel that further development in areas like visa processes, employment after studies, ranking, and student support services would be necessary if India wishes to become a competitor to other education centers.
International Student Enrolment Shows Steady Growth
According to the most recent AISHE report, Indian higher educational institutions admitted 58,134 international students during the 2023–24 academic year, whereas in 2019–20, 48,898 international students had enrolled. This is an 18.9% increase over five years and shows that there has been continuous progress even amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak.
In the past decade, the number of nations sending their students to study in India increased from 158 to 173.
According to education experts, this rise is attributed to India’s low-cost education system, English medium programmes, and the increasing network of internationally renowned institutions.
Nepal Continues to Lead as the Largest Source Country
According to AISHE, Nepal continues to remain the largest source of international students in India, contributing 24.1% to the total number of foreign enrollments in 2023-24. The rest include the UAE (7%), USA (5.9%), Bangladesh (5.9%), and Nigeria (5.5%). The combined contributions of these top ten source countries constitute around two-thirds of the international student population in India.
It has been observed that the factors such as proximity, familiarity with culture, low costs, and academic connections make India an ideal destination for students from neighboring countries and Africa and Middle East regions.
Study in India and NEP 2020 Driving Internationalisation
One of the main reasons for an increase in the number of international students in India is the consistent efforts made by the government towards internationalizing the higher education system.
In 2018, the government introduced the Study in India initiative that aimed at attracting foreign students through marketing the educational institutions of India in the international arena, making admissions easier and awarding scholarships to qualified students. In addition to this, the NEP 2020 has been advocating for building international connections among the universities of India.
Karnataka Emerges as India’s Top Destination
Karnataka stands out among all the Indian states when it comes to being the best destination for international students because it maintains the largest share of foreign enrolments in the AISHE survey. Karnataka, with its collection of prestigious universities, engineering colleges, medical schools, and research institutes, keeps on attracting students from around the world.
Bengaluru is one city which stands out as it offers both education and a rich technological environment for international students.
Punjab, on the other hand, has also seen considerable growth as it surpassed Tamil Nadu to become the second best destination for international students.
Opportunities for India as a Global Education Hub
Higher numbers of international students bring about many other advantages apart from the benefits that are experienced within university environments.
An increasing number of international students helps with the development of cultural exchange, cooperation between universities, research collaboration, and establishment of better diplomatic relations. Additionally, foreign students have an economic impact by making various expenditures such as for accommodation, food, transport, and other goods and services.
Experts in the field state that India has certain comparative advantages with respect to providing internationally acknowledged education at substantially reduced prices compared to many Western countries. The introduction of programs taught in English language and courses in technology, medicine, management, and engineering makes India even more competitive in that regard.
With increased capacity and effective marketing, India can become a major player in the international education market in the next decade.
Challenges That Still Need Attention
Even with a focus on growth, however, experts point out some key challenges that India needs to overcome in order to become a competitive destination for higher education in comparison with other countries.
First, the visa procedures need to be reconsidered, as they have not yet been made sufficiently simple for international students. Another issue that is often raised by experts is related to post-study work opportunities, which should be clear enough for many international students when choosing a destination.
The level of infrastructure differs from one institution to another. Even though there are several universities offering high-quality infrastructure, others require certain developments in terms of accommodation, international assistance, campus infrastructure, and research facilities.
The global rankings of universities play an essential role in decision-making for international students, which means that it is critical to invest in research and innovation.
In general, India has all opportunities to improve its position in the global education market.
Why the Latest Data Matters
The increase in international students in India is about much more than growing numbers of enrolments.
This shows that India is slowly positioning itself as a major player in the global higher education scenario. In today’s world, where nations are competing to attract global talent, the recruitment of foreign students is seen not just as an educational mission but also an economic and diplomatic one.
India has made its case strong with the help of policy changes, cost-effective education system, and growing academic capacity. But to sustain this success, the country will have to work on quality and competitiveness.
Conclusion
The higher education sector in India has become more globalized than ever before, recording a total number of 58,134 foreign students hailing from 173 different nations studying in the 2023-24 academic year. This 19% growth over the past five years can be attributed to various government schemes, including ‘Study in India’ and NEP 2020, among others, along with Karnataka emerging as the go-to state for international students.
Despite some issues that include visa-related ones and lack of proper infrastructure among others, the current statistics clearly reflect India’s growing image as a destination for international education.
