India Steps Up Green Transit Infrastructure: New Electric Vehicle Charging Corridors Announced

There is an emphasis by the Centre to prioritize certain highways in establishing EV charging stations as they address the problem of range anxiety, which is the fear of an EV running out of power without reaching a charging station. The government has appealed to states and the National Highways Authority of India to expedite plans for setting up charging facilities on 74 crucial highways.
The plan will prove helpful for longer-distance traveling EVs such as cars, buses and trucks. The provision of EV charging stations on major transit corridors will enable inter-city commuting through EVs to become viable and help businesses adopt EVs for commercial purposes.
PM E-DRIVE Scheme Supports Charging Network Expansion
PM E-DRIVE scheme, which was started in 2024, is an important scheme for electric mobility initiatives of India. Total cost involved in this scheme is ₹11,900 crore, and the scheme is extended up to March 2028. ₹2,000 crore has been allocated by the government for EV charger installations in public places throughout the country. Up to September 28, 2026, approval of ₹851 crore has been made for 8,147 chargers through three oil marketing firms and ten states.
The entire scheme includes electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, buses, ambulances, trucks, manufacturing and testing of these vehicles in India. This is necessary to ensure that there is adequate infrastructure as EV adoption increases.
What the Expansion Means for EV Owners
A more extensive charging network could help EV owners plan longer journeys with greater confidence. Businesses operating delivery fleets, taxis and commercial vehicles may also benefit from more dependable charging options along frequently travelled routes.
However, the impact will depend on how quickly proposed stations become operational, their charging capacity, electricity supply and maintenance. Chargers must be available at convenient locations and remain functional to deliver a reliable experience.
India’s green transit transition will require continued coordination between central and state governments, energy companies, charging operators and vehicle manufacturers. If implementation keeps pace with EV adoption, the expanding network could support cleaner transport, reduce dependence on conventional fuels and strengthen India’s electric mobility ecosystem.
