Why Does This Fighter Jet Have a Mysterious Golden Window?

A fighter jet’s gold-coloured window can look like science fiction. On aircraft such as the US F-22 Raptor, however, the tint serves a practical goal: making the aircraft harder for radar to detect. The golden fighter jet canopy is not a decorative screen. It is part of a design that treats even the cockpit as a possible source of radar reflections.
Why the canopy looks gold
The canopy should provide the pilot with an unobstructed and broad vision. However, radar can penetrate an untreated canopy and reflect off the pilot, the helmet, the ejection seat and the instruments, increasing the radar signature of the aircraft.
Engineers use a thin conducting film that reflects very little to apply to some canopies of a fighter to reduce those reflections. There are transparent conducting materials, for example indium tin oxide (ITO), but the specific coating may differ depending on the aircraft and not necessarily be public. The optical effect can create a gold or a bronze look to the canopy, but still allow for seeing through it.
Several other combat planes, such as the F-35 and F-16, have similar coatings, but they’re not exactly the same. The appearance of a canopy can be altered through the use of light, viewing angle and canopy design.
How does it help stealth?
The coating is designed to reflect or redirect radar energy before it reaches the cockpit’s complex interior. This lowers the aircraft’s radar cross-section- the measure of how visible it appears to radar. It does not make a jet invisible.
Stealth also depends on the aircraft’s shape, surface materials and other design choices. The US Air Force describes the F-22 Raptor as combining low-observable technology with advanced sensors and avionics.
Is it real gold?
Not necessarily. The shiny look doesn’t mean a canopy is filled with a gold sheet. The tint is achieved by using thin conductive films and varies from aircraft to aircraft. Studies of aircraft-canopy coatings refer to ITO as a transparent conducting oxide, which must have a combination of electrical conductivity and optical clarity. A single photo is not enough to prove the formula of the specific jet of the military.
The canopy is also an intricate piece of hardware. The F-22 has a canopy that weighs roughly 360 pounds (163 kilograms), as it must be strong, have excellent visibility and be stealthy, according to an article published by SAE International.
Why this detail matters
Sharp wings or special paint aren’t the only things that make a plane a stealth plane. Cockpit openings can also reflect radar, so the designer needs to take that into consideration.
A golden canopy is a sign of an unseen battle, one that is fought in the manipulation of the interaction of radar waves and an aircraft. Seemed futuristic, but useful; to minimize the radar returns without compromising the pilot’s view.
