‘Born Retired’: Baby Born With Moustache Goes Viral, Internet Reacts

A newborn with a thick, dark moustache has become an unlikely internet star, with viewers joking that he looks ready to retire before taking his first steps. The viral newborn moustache video, reportedly from Ecuador, has spread across social media and sparked memes and questions about its authenticity.
Some users called the infant “born retired, with 3 kids and 2 mortgages”. Others joked that he was already “tired of his 9-to-5 job”. The clip has inspired edited pictures of the baby in suits and costumes.
But behind the jokes is a fair question: was the moustache really there at birth?
Is the video verified?
The video is said to have been connected to the Ecuadorian government, but has yet to be substantiated independently. No hospital or doctor or family with ties to the clip has been reported in the news, nor has a medical record been released to confirm the story. It is therefore unknown what part of the world the man was born in and what circumstances he was in.
The moustache has been a question mark too. The dark hair seems to wriggle around the frame in the versions that have been seen in the news and does not always flow as the baby’s face does. The lighting also appears to be different from the light emitted by the baby’s skin. The signs indicate that the moustache might have been digitally added, possibly using an AI filter or editing program. But no public forensic report has been released on how the video was created.
Can newborns have facial hair?
Yes, some infants are born with fine hair on their bodies called lanugo. It begins to form 16 to 20 weeks into the pregnancy, and can persist after birth, particularly in premature infants. Lanugo is soft and thin, and usually sheds naturally within the first weeks or months of life. It may be on the face, shoulders and back.
Lanugo is not the same as a thick, well-defined adult moustache, however. Just because they have natural newborn hair, it doesn’t necessarily mean that what they did in this viral clip was a real appearance.
Why the clip caught attention
It was easy to make the video into a joke, as it was a very small baby versus an adult-looking moustache. The social media users drew additions to the baby’s face, such as imaginary work and family issues & adult problems. The memes only helped the clip spread, but don’t substantiate the content of the story.
This episode is a warning that a video can appear convincing and yet be edited. Viewers should first determine if the source of the unusual footage is known and if it has been reported reliably to make sure that the footage is substantiated by reliable reporting.
The baby’s identity and location have not been confirmed at this time, nor have details of when and how it was born. The baby is real, but there is no strong evidence of a natural moustache. In the meantime, the “born retired” saga should be regarded as a viral joke and not as a medical fact.
