AI Cargo Theft: GPS Spoofing Hits Highways

Criminal organisations have become involved in hacking attacks on trucks that are transporting AI data centre hardware that is costly. The threat posed by the organised criminal organisations has brought to light the weakness in global logistics chains due to the increasing demand for servers, computer chips and other AI hardware.

NBC News investigative reports in October 2026 revealed that organised criminals have looted goods worth more than $100 million from data centre-related cargo ships since June. The list of stolen cargo includes servers, memory chips, optical fibre, copper wiring and other network components.

How Criminals Exploit Freight Networks

Many times, cargo theft starts way before the truck reaches the highway as criminal gangs have been known to access freight brokers’ accounts on listing sites for shipments and identify valuable cargos from there.

Sometimes, thieves place fake shipment listings on such sites to lure legitimate transport companies, after which they provide malicious links and gain access to the company’s account.

Thieves are also known to use fake driver licenses, fake carrier papers, and hacked logistics credentials to obtain valuable cargos by posing as legitimate transport employees.

After obtaining the cargo, they can switch it to another vehicle and shift the route.

GPS Spoofing Makes Tracking Difficult

GPS spoofing has become yet another issue for freight safety. The process entails broadcasting false GPS locations that confuse tracking devices as regards to the exact location of the car.

It has been found out that criminals made use of spoofed tracking locations in at least one major case of theft of data centre equipment. It resulted in an inability of the electronic tracking systems to determine the real location of the shipment.

Thefts have also occurred due to joint attacks against the escort cars. In other cases, cars rammed and pushed escort cars out of the road in order to let the trucks transporting expensive equipment go unnoticed.

AI Infrastructure Becomes a High-Value Target

However, the fast growth of AI data centers has boosted the value of devices shipped via logistics chains, which can cost millions in a single transport. In contrast to regular consumer goods, such devices might have specialized customers and resale routes. It is believed that some stolen devices are shipped overseas and even to regions with export regulations for particular advanced technologies.

There are also fears among officials and industry representatives that international criminal groups can organize cargo thefts across various states and logistics services.

Companies Reconsider Supply Chain Security

The freight carriers and tech firms are assessing their security protocols in order to avoid any future losses. The steps that have been taken include enhanced driver identification, background checks, secure cargo tracking, authentication and surveillance.

The companies are also evaluating independent GPS devices, increased carrier registration check as well as enhanced communication between drivers, escorts and dispatch crews.

This increasing menace demonstrates the importance of improved cybersecurity at transport networks. Safeguarding AI systems is not only limited to the protection of data centers but also the logistics chain carrying the critical technologies.
