CISF Signs Pact to Boost Counter-Drone Security Across Aviation, Nuclear and Space Assets

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has made another move toward boosting the level of security against rogue drones in view of their increased threat. According to the information, CISF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Drone Federation of India (DFI) on August 28, 2026.
The deal is very important since CISF is involved in the protection of some of India’s most critical sites such as airports, nuclear installations, space centers and oil refineries. The organization currently protects more than 370 installations in the country, and has already been declared the nodal agency for dealing with threats from the air.
Why Is CISF Boosting Its Counter-Drone Security Capabilities?
With their increased affordability, power and difficulty in tracking, drones now present a certain level of security problem at critical infrastructures. A rogue drone that is not supposed to be there poses certain threats from surveillance to serious security incidents.

Not only airports but also installations associated with nuclear power generation and space programme of India can be exposed to threats posed by unauthorised drones.
Facilities dedicated to India’s space programme in particular are filled with highly-sensitive equipment.
A case in point is a drone spotted on August 23 near ISRO’s Satellite Integration and Test Establishment in Bengaluru. The drone flew outside the facility’s perimeter.
Although it does not mean automatically that drones are flown with a malicious intent, this case demonstrates the necessity to have proper systems for detecting and responding to unauthorised aerial objects.
CISF Has Already Gained Experience in Countering Drones
As it appears, CISF has some experience in operating with drones.
For example, CISF claims to train about 3,000 officers in drone and anti-drone procedures. Furthermore, 80 CISF units have adopted drones for monitoring and threat detection purposes.
Thus, the latest agreement seeks to build upon the current capability of the organisation.
Additionally, a special team of domain experts has been created in CISF in order to introduce drones into its activities.
Behror Could Be a Counter-Drone Centre of Excellence
One of the most interesting points of the agreement is CISF’s plans to transform its Recruit Training Centre at Behror into a Centre of Excellence for Drone and Counter-Drone Systems.
As it appears, this Centre would operate according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Thus, it could help CISF officers to test new technologies for dealing with drone-related threats.
What Will Training and Testing Look Like?
The collaboration is expected to extend beyond classroom-level training as well. According to the reports on the agreement, the collaboration will include controlled exercises meant to assess the personnel’s reaction to potential incidents involving the use of rogue drones.
These exercises will allow evaluating the entire response chain, from the moment of detection and tracking through the escalation and response process.
Such testing is crucial since the security in case of counter-drones is not only about the possession of the detection system but also about the knowledge and skills of personnel to properly interpret the alerts and respond appropriately during the incident.
Why Indigenous Drone Technology Is Important
Apart from other aspects, another dimension of the MoU worth noting is the focus on Indian startups and companies working with drones.
In recent years, India developed a robust domestic ecosystem related to drone technologies. It includes different industries such as civilian, industrial, agricultural, surveillance and defence. Thus, incorporating the ecosystem into the security partnership can help CISF select appropriate technologies for their needs.
Moreover, the partnership will facilitate the development of self-reliant security architecture instead of relying exclusively on imported solutions. As the head of DFI explained, the agreement allows connecting the needs with indigenous technological innovations.
The Significance of the Agreement for the National Security
Firstly, the importance of the new agreement lies in the evolving nature of the threats connected with aerial objects. The increasing accessibility and sophistication of drones mean that the traditional perimeter security might not be sufficient anymore in the case of some installations.
