C-DAC and Bank of India Sign MoU to Develop Indigenous Quantum Technologies for Banking
The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and the Bank of India have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purpose of exploring the possibilities for developing and utilizing homegrown quantum technologies within the banking industry. This collaboration is geared towards enhancing technological independence in India while at the same time equipping banks for future opportunities and challenges that come with quantum computing.
The MoU represents a coming together of skills held by both C-DAC and Bank of India with regards to advanced computing and financial services respectively.
Focus on Indigenous Quantum Technology Development
Quantum computing is the use of quantum mechanical phenomena for processing information in a way that is different from traditional computing. While the technology is still evolving, it has the ability to solve specific problems and revolutionise certain domains of scientific research, optimisation, and information security.
As per the proposed partnership between the two organisations, C-DAC and Bank of India will work on possible application of quantum technologies to the field of finance. This partnership is in line with India’s efforts to indigenise computing technologies.
C-DAC, which is a body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has been instrumental in developing computing technologies.
Strengthening Banking Cybersecurity
Another area of focus for the finance industry is quantum-proof cybersecurity. With the advent of quantum computers that are more advanced, some public-key cryptography may be vulnerable to attacks in the future. Post-quantum cryptography is one of the sets of cryptographic protocols that can resist attacks even from a quantum computer as well as traditional computers.
Thus, the partnership between C-DAC and the Bank of India could be useful to find ways to secure banks using new technologies. Nevertheless, quantum computing is not an automatic replacement of any traditional banking system that requires testing and further security assessment.
Supporting India’s Quantum Mission
This collaboration is in line with the National Quantum Mission of India that was sanctioned by the Union Cabinet in 2023 and received an outlay of ₹6,003.65 crore between 2023-24 and 2030-31.
The primary objective of the mission is to focus on advancing quantum computing, quantum communications, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials. This will foster domestic research capacity and promote cooperation among academics and government organisations.
A collaboration between a national technology body and a leading public sector bank could facilitate this relationship between research and real-world banking needs.
What the Partnership Means for Banking
With growing digital banking and connectivity within financial systems, it is crucial that data security and resiliency continue to be enhanced.
The MoU sets the stage for investigating the role that indigenous quantum technologies could play in ensuring that our banking systems are ready for the future. The ultimate impact will depend on results from research, cost, and feasibility of implementing the technology in existing networks.
This partnership marks yet another effort by India to establish its advanced technological ecosystem.
