BSNL Launches Satellite Phone in India- Price, Features and Who Can Use It

Government-controlled Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has rolled out its Satellite Phone services in India, which will enable connectivity in areas where there are no mobile networks to start with. This differs from conventional smartphones, which depend on mobile towers; however, BSNL satellite phone is capable of communicating with satellites. The BSNL satellite phone costs ₹1,34,166 (all taxes inclusive).
It is worth mentioning here that the BSNL satellite phone will not serve the purpose of general smartphone users.
What Is the BSNL Satellite Phone?
This satellite phone service is an Inmarsat-based service and enables customers to talk and send SMS despite the lack of mobile services in particular places. This is because this phone service does not depend on telecommunication towers but rather satellites. It works in places that include remote mountainous areas, jungles, offshore locations, deserts, and disaster areas.
This service has been introduced through the initiative of BSNL titled “Communication Beyond Boundaries.”
Price of the BSNL Satellite Phone
The device has already been introduced in India at a price of ₹1,34,166 after taxes. It is more costly than some of the current best smartphones in India, including many iPhone models.
Nonetheless, the pricing is due to the dedicated satellite communication technology involved.
Key Features of the BSNL Satellite Phone
This telephone is manufactured keeping in mind its reliability over entertainment and multimedia aspects. It enables satellite voice calls and SMS messages via Inmarsat satellites and works even when terrestrial telecom systems are not available. Its rugged nature makes it an ideal tool for use in tough environmental conditions as well as its long-lasting battery ensures its feasibility for outdoor purposes. It is also reported to have the ability to enable emergency communications.
Who Can Use It?
This satellite phone by BSNL is not meant for people who wish to buy their smartphones. As per the claims of BSNL, the target customers of this satellite phone include those who need the phone in an area where there is no connectivity provided by any network.
These include those who work in defence, shipping, emergencies, mining, remote industry, adventure and emergencies. As satellite phone usage is regulated in India, the availability of the phone may depend upon certain laws of the Indian government.
How Is It Different From a Regular Smartphone?
A regular mobile phone relies on the mobile towers that are close to it. However, without the network coverage, the functions of making calls and sending messages become impossible.
This is not the case with the BSNL satellite phone as it connects itself to the satellites that are orbiting around the Earth and this helps one to remain connected even where no mobile tower exists.
Where Can You Buy It?
BSNL has said that those who wish to know about the product can get in touch with the nearest BSNL office or BSNL helpline. The product is not being launched as a consumer item from the online/offline smartphone shops.
Why This Launch Matters
Satellite communications have been increasing in India to ensure connectivity in areas that are difficult and underserved. The launching of the BSNL satellite phone is part of this general strategy aimed at providing alternatives to communication that go beyond traditional telecoms networks.
It will ensure connectivity in case of emergencies, natural disasters, border operations, remote industries, and long-distance travel where there has been no connectivity.

Unlike any other high-end smartphones available in the market, the BSNL Satellite Phone is a unique device designed for usage when normal mobile phones do not function well. It uses satellite calls, tough construction, and connectivity even in areas where traditional cellular network is unavailable, thus fulfilling the requirements of people working in tough conditions.
For people working in areas without access to mobile towers, the latest satellite phone from BSNL can prove to be a very useful piece of equipment in communicating; however, for most people, this is a niche product.
