States Urge Centre for Urgent Financial Support to Sustain Women’s Livelihood Mission and NULM 2.0

Many states have asked the Central government to extend immediate financial help to help sustain livelihood schemes for women, as well as to launch the next phase of NULM called NULM 2.0. There is an understanding of the issue as states realise the need for sustained funding in case of self-help groups, urban informal workers, and poor families, who depend on government-sponsored livelihood schemes.
There is also an understanding of sustaining funding as there is a need for regular work and small enterprises, which help reduce poverty.
Why Are States Seeking Financial Support?
Livelihood programs for women make sure that their members get financial aid and gain skills required for conducting business. Self-help groups rely on governmental support, banks, and training programs to conduct small-scale business operations and generate income.
Any delay in financial aid may hamper the process of training, enterprise development and assistance at community level. Therefore, state governments have emphasized the need for fund allocation on time.
Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) also have an important role to play in conducting livelihood programs. Financial assistance enables them to provide employment and other facilities to vulnerable families.
What Is NULM 2.0?
The National Urban Livelihoods Mission is aimed at alleviating urban poverty through encouraging self-employment and skill development of vulnerable sections of society. Some of its schemes have assisted urban self-help groups, street vendors and job aspirants.
The NULM 2.0 scheme is intended to further contribute to this process in light of emerging employment requirements in Indian cities. However, the success of this programme will largely depend upon the formulation of policies, funding and coordination between Central and state governments and urban bodies.
The new scheme can be helpful to informal workers, migrants, women entrepreneurs and poor households.
Importance of Women’s Livelihood Programmes
Self-help groups formed by women become contributors to economic development in the local area by means of collective saving, loan facility and small business. The activities like food processing, sewing, handicrafts and retail business would enable them to earn an independent income and become financially stable.
Continuous flow of financial support is critical for these businesses to continue, grow and reach out to bigger markets. Training, credit and market facilities can help make them more successful in the future.
What Happens Next?
In light of the demand from the states, the attention would shift to the role of the Centre and how the future funding mechanism will look like in the case of women’s livelihood programmes and NULM 2.0. Financial help, proper implementation and monitoring of these initiatives would prove important in the process.
Further actions would be taken in accordance with the decisions made by the authorities. Consistent financial support can help secure existing livelihoods and create newer ones for women.
