India-Singapore SIMBEX-26 Naval Exercise Begins in Visakhapatnam: Key Highlights

Indian Navy and Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) have commenced the 33rd round of Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise known as SIMBEX-2026 in Visakhapatnam. The six-day exercise has started on October 21 and will be conducted till October 26 to conduct professional interactions and training in maritime warfare between the navies of both the nations.
This exercise is held to increase operational synergy, interoperability, and maritime cooperation between India and Singapore due to new challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
SIMBEX-2026: Key Highlights
The commencement of this exercise took place on board the Indian Navy ships INS Nilgiri and INS Kamorta. Both of these navies’ senior officers were present at the event, which marked the start of this year’s iteration of this traditional joint exercise.
The Republic of Singapore Navy warship RSS Supreme arrived at Visakhapatnam on October 21 to take part in the exercise. This allows the staff of both nations to exchange information about their operations and perform maritime tasks jointly.
The SIMBEX-2026 exercise is carried out in two stages: the Harbour stage and the Sea stage. Different aspects of cooperation between the navies are covered during each stage, including professional discussions, planning, and tactical operations.
Harbour Phase: Professional Exchanges and Joint Planning
Harbour phase, which is set to run from October 21 to October 23, aims at enhancing the working relationship as well as the level of coordination among the navies involved.
Some of the activities during this phase include the exchange of subject matter experts, cross deck visits, sports, and planning meetings. This will enable the naval personnel to gain knowledge about each other’s operational processes.
This will be important in preparing for the sea phase exercises.
Sea Phase: Maritime Warfare and Tactical Drills
The Sea Phase will be conducted in the Bay of Bengal from October 24 to 26. The phase will involve exercises and manoeuvres to enhance the cooperation of the participating forces in an operational environment.
The intended activities will comprise submarine warfare exercises, surface warfare manoeuvres, air warfare manoeuvres, seamanship evolutions and tactical manoeuvres.
The exercise is expected to assist the navies in developing their response to different threats at sea.
Strengthening India-Singapore Maritime Relations
SIMBEX was first held back in 1994 under the name of Exercise Lion King and has evolved into an essential element of the defence collaboration between India and Singapore. With time, the exercise has become broader and more complicated, which is a sign of the developing professional connection between the navies of these two states.
Another important aspect of this year’s SIMBEX is the strategic significance of the cooperation in the field of maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, which remains one of the most crucial priorities for the region.
In this way, through professional dialogue and naval drills, SIMBEX-2026 becomes a chance for India and Singapore to develop mutual trust and enhance their interoperability.
