Ministry of Defence Arm and AI Firm Sarvam Partner to Launch Indigenised Tri-Service AI Solutions

Another significant move towards bolstering indigenous defense technology has been made by India. This is because of a recently signed memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Defence’s HQIDS and AI start-up company Sarvam. The MoU was signed on October 27, 2026, and paves the way for the creation of solutions based on artificial intelligence for use in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The intention is to come up with applications that utilize AI for military purposes thereby limiting dependence on external technology.
What Does the Sarvam-HQ IDS Agreement Cover?
As per the deal, Sarvam will be responsible for designing and developing AI applications for all three branches of armed forces. Besides, the firm will also provide technical assistance after deployment whereas HQ IDS will work on the coordination of the projects in each branch and in joint military organizations.
This platform would allow all three branches to have access to the same AI technologies which include foundation models, agentic AI infrastructure, and geospatial and perception systems.
The development of a common technology platform can be helpful for the services to share their learnings and solutions.
The deal involves a number of projects but details about the applications, deployment, and monetary benefits of the collaboration remain undisclosed.
Focus on Decision Support and Data Integration
Proposed AI systems would be oriented towards decision support, targeting and data fusion through the military’s sensor-to-shooter chain.
Data fusion includes integration of information gathered from a variety of sources, including sensors and geospatial systems, that will allow military personnel to gain a better understanding of the situation.
AI-driven analytics could facilitate processing of large amounts of information and identifying important patterns in it, which would be useful when assessing information from different sources in a complicated environment.
Nevertheless, the agreement leaves operational decisions under human control. The use of AI is meant to assist military personnel, not make independent decisions instead of them.
Sarvam’s Chanakya Division to Lead the Work
The projects will be implemented by way of Chanakya, Sarvam’s specific division focused on national security and defence. This team will make use of the company’s artificial intelligence platform technology, consisting of the Sarvam 105B foundation model.
Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam co-founder, mentioned that the partnership is aligned with the company’s vision of developing AI for India’s needs in India. He referred to working with three armed forces as both honour and privilege.
This project is also consistent with Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy aimed at the development of defence technologies in the country.
What It Means for India’s Defence Modernisation
This partnership is indicative of the increasing focus on indigenous AI capacities for national security. Utilization of AI on native infrastructure may assist India in maintaining more control over classified military information and technologies.
On the other hand, the common structure might prove helpful in learning lessons from each project and applying them in further implementations within the army.
Still, this will all depend on the actual implementation, reliability, cybersecurity issues and capacity of implementing AI into military structures.
In any case, success of the partnership will be determined based on how well such solutions prove to be in increasing operational awareness and personnel coordination in India’s army.
