Flash Floods Hit Kottakudi River in Tamil Nadu: Tourists Evacuated From Anaipillaiyar Falls

Excessive rains in the Western Ghats have caused a rapid increase in the water level in the Kottakudi river in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, causing fears among people living near the falls and other places along the river.
The rainwater has entered the regions around Bodi, which are fed by the hills around the river. People have been asked not to enter the river and risk being swept away by the fast-moving waters.
Heavy Rainfall Triggers Sudden Rise in River Water
There have been considerable increases in water flow in the Kottakudi River due to continuous rainfall in the Western Ghats, specifically around the catchment areas of Kurangani and other hills.
The reports dated October 23 stated that floodwater was being rushed quickly through the river into the Vaigai basin area. There were worries over possible quick rises in the level of water, especially in the areas where tourists frequent by the river and waterfalls.
The Anaipillaiyar check dam in the vicinity of Bodi was also facing problems in overflooding after the rainfall.
Flash floods are extremely dangerous as the level of water could increase quickly even if the rainfall in the tourist site is relatively moderate. There could be flash floods from rain in upstream areas.
Tourist Safety Measures Around Waterfalls
The authorities have limited access to water bodies that are sensitive to any kind of accidents. Similarly, other tourist spots in the vicinity such as the Kumbakarai Falls and Suruli Falls, which had high levels of water, are now closed for swimming due to high risk factors.
The visitors are encouraged to abide by the orders issued by the local authorities and forest officials. The individuals should be careful not to step inside the rivers, stand on the slippery rocks, and approach check dams overflowing with water to take photos.
In addition, the locals have been informed not to cross the river or take animals into it.
Northeast Monsoon Raises Concerns Across Tamil Nadu
The current floods occur due to the Northeast Monsoon, which is currently bringing rain in the region of Tamil Nadu. Rains have similarly made the daily lives of people difficult in other parts of the district, leading to weather warnings of the closure of tourism sites.
It is important to first focus on the safety of people amid continuous rains in the region. Those planning a visit to the Theni district should consult weather warnings before proceeding.
These closures have been done as preventive steps to ensure that no drowning incidents or other forms of accidents take place in the region.
