Ladakh Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena Launches Saffron Cultivation Under Project Him Sarovar

In an important milestone towards fostering sustainable farming in the Union Territory, Ladakh Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has formally inaugurated Project Him Sarovar Saffron Cultivation. The project is expected to help promote quality farming, increase farmers’ earnings, and also help diversify the agricultural scene in Ladakh through the cultivation of saffron.
This project demonstrates the administration’s foresight of blending advanced agricultural techniques with the peculiar climatic features of Ladakh to create new economic prospects for the locals.
What is Project Him Sarovar?
Saffron Cultivation Under Project Him Sarovar is an initiative by the government that aims at expanding the production of saffron beyond its natural growing regions. This project involves the identification of suitable land for growing saffron, adopting scientific methods in farming and also giving technical assistance to the farmers who wish to cultivate saffron, which is among the most expensive spices in the world.
This will be instrumental in reducing dependency on normal crops.
I am pleased to announce an ambitious experiment of introducing saffron cultivation to Ladakh, for the very first time, on a large scale. Building on the incredible success of our highest-altitude Lilium fields, we have sown 800 kg i.e 90,000 nos of premium, high-quality Iranian saffron corms, perfectly suited to our unique high-altitude agro-climatic conditions. The saffron cultivation is being done over 4000 sq meters of previously barren land at Spituk Pharka in Leh, that has been successfully rejuvenated and transformed under project Him Sarovar. This landmark initiative is driven by Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision of agricultural diversification for farmers’ financial sustainability and financial empowerment. This pioneering project has immense potential to strengthen our local economy, creating lucrative and sustainable new livelihood opportunities for our hardworking farmers, youth, and Self-Help Groups.
