Odisha School Closure Update: 5 Districts Shut Down, High Alert Declared Due to Cyclone Threat

Odisha state government has made it compulsory to shut down all the schools, colleges and Anganwadi centers in five districts of the state on October 28 and 29 as a part of precautions being taken by the government in anticipation of an impending cyclone in India’s eastern region.
The districts which are covered under the shutdown instruction include Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri. The government has taken into account the safety of the students as the weather system moving towards Andhra Pradesh coast from the Bay of Bengal may affect the adjacent region of Odisha.
Odisha School Holiday: Which Districts Are Affected?
As per the preparedness statement released by the state government, all educational institutions in the five districts shall remain closed on Wednesday, October 28 and Thursday, October 29, 2026.
This includes schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres within the affected areas. For other districts, it will be left to the discretion of the District Collector to either declare holidays depending on the weather situation.
Parents and students should check for any notifications from their district administrations and schools with regard to any further instructions concerning class work or examinations.
Cyclone Threat: IMD Forecast and Weather Warnings
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has observed that a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to form a cyclone that will head for the coast of Andhra Pradesh.
The low-pressure area is anticipated to cause very heavy rainfall in certain parts of the state of Odisha, especially those located in the southern parts of the state. These areas include Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Though the expected landing of this area of low pressure is going to be in Andhra Pradesh, precautions have been taken by Odisha authorities because of the possibility of heavy winds and rainfall causing trouble in certain regions of the state.
Odisha Government Activates Disaster Preparedness Measures
The Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has asked government departments and district administrations to stay alert and coordinate their disaster response plans and prioritize the safety of lives.
Preparation for any kind of rescue and relief operation by teams of disaster response was maintained. The officials have also been asked to make arrangements to evacuate people living in the low lying areas.
The fishermen were told not to venture out into the sea. Similarly, the public was asked to stay away from traveling in severe weather conditions.
What Should Students and Parents Do?
Parents need to get information about closures from official communication channels of the school and the district rather than getting updates through social media platforms. Students can also be on the lookout for any updates concerning exams and opening of schools.
The administration‘s primary focus is to prevent any casualties and make sure that the emergency services are on standby before the weather worsens. Any decision regarding closure of schools in other districts will depend on the new forecast.
