Mamata Banerjee thanks voters as TMC is close to victory in by-polls
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is leading from both the Ballygunge assembly seat and Asansol Lok Sabha seat in the West Bengal by-polls. The Chief Minister of West Bengal and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has thanked voters for supporting the TMC candidates in the polls.
Banerjee wrote on Twitter, “I sincerely thank the electors of the Asansol Parliamentary Constituency and the Ballygunge Assembly Constituency for giving the decisive mandate to AITC party candidates.” She also saluted the voters for reposing faith in TMC.
The TMC has fielded former Union Minister and Bollywood Actor Shatrughan Sinha while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated Agnimitra Paul from the Asansol constituency for the by-poll. Shatrughan Sinha is already ahead by over 3 lakh votes. Shatrughan Sinha is set to return as a Lok Sabha MP after three years. Earlier, he quit the BJP shortly before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and joined the Congress. Later on, he also quit Congress. He joined the Mamata Banerjee-led party recently.
The by-polls were necessitated after former Union Minister Babul Supriyo resigned as the Lok Sabha MP of Asansol after resigning from the BJP. Later on, he joined the TMC. The Ballygunge Assembly seat by-poll was necessitated after the demise of state Minister Subrata Mukherjee in November. Supiyo has now been fielded from the Ballygung assembly seat.
Bye-election to a Ballygunge Assembly seat and Asansol Lok Sabha seat was held on April 12. The result will be declared on Saturday. Both Supriyo and Sinha are leading from the Ballygunge assembly seat and Asansol Lok Sabha seat, respectively.
Supriyo reportedly said, “It is still early to say anything, but I feel people have voted for us in huge numbers. Let us enjoy the day.”
In the state Assembly elections last year, TMC won 213 seats while BJP garnered 77 seats in the 294-seat state Assembly.
