Kota Canal Boat Tragedy: Search Operations Intensify After Four Youths Drown During Durga Idol Immersion

An unfortunate event relating to the immersion of Durga idols at Kota has once again brought to light the safety measures taken during religious festivals and activities involving water bodies. It is believed that efforts are being put in place to search for missing people after four young men drowned in a canal while taking part in immersion activities.
The event has highlighted the dangers involved in immersion of idols in waters which are deep or flowing rapidly, especially when religious activities take place.
Search Operations Underway
The rescue teams are also reported to be carrying out search and rescue missions within the canal area. The nature of the searches may depend on the water condition and include police, emergency service personnel, and trained divers.
Searching for missing persons in such a scenario might prove to be difficult due to the presence of strong currents, low visibility, and fluctuating water levels.
Furthermore, police should also obtain evidence from the witnesses and participants in the immersion ceremony regarding how the youths fell into the water and whether any effort was made to rescue them.
Two Bodies Recovered, Search Continues for Two Others
The incident took place on October 20 near Steel Bridge in Kotri Canal of Kota where a boat carrying seven persons capsized during the immersion ceremony. Out of those seven, three were able to save themselves but the other four youths drowned due to the heavy water.
As per the news on Wednesday, the dead bodies of two youths have been fished out, whose names were Suraj Singh, 22, and Vikas Verma, 22. The two youths who were still missing include Rahul Joshi, 18, and Ashu Joshi, 19.
The involvement of the teams of SDRF, NDRF, municipal corporation, and civil defense force has been seen in the rescue mission. There has also been a reduction in the flow of water in the canal for easier rescue of the youth.
Safety Concerns After the Tragedy
According to Rajasthan’s education minister Madan Dilwar, the accident took place in an area where idol immersion was not allowed. The authorities have made provisions for immersion spots, which will have security personnel on standby.
Om Birla, the speaker of Lok Sabha, has also visited the place to see how the rescue operations were going on. This tragedy has again raised questions regarding the use of dangerous boats as well as the dangers involved in conducting religious ceremonies in unauthorized water bodies.
The whole community is now disturbed due to this accident, and the authorities have asked people to visit only authorized spots to conduct the ceremony safely.
