Indian Stock Market Holidays and Bank Holidays in May 2025

The Indian stock market remains closed on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day. Celebrated on the first date of May each year, Maharashtra Din is a state holiday, commemorating the formation of the state of Maharashtra in India in 1960.
The holiday calendar of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) state that all market segments including equity and SLB are going to remain shut for the day. But many important companies are announcing their fourth quarter results.
On the other hand, multiple banks across India are also remaining closed on May 1. The Reserve Bank of India has designated six bank holidays for this month. Bank holidays in India differ from state to state and are determined by regional, national and religious matters.
May 1 – Maharashtra Day and International Labour Day
Banks remain closed in Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Imphal, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Panaji, Nagpur and some more cities.
May 9 – Birthday of Rabindranath Tagore
Banks in Kolkata remain closed on May 9 to celebrate the birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, famous for reshaping Bengali literature and music and also Indian art.
May 12 – Buddha Purnima
Banks in Agartala, Belapur, Bhopal, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar and some other places remain closed.
May 16 – State Day
Banks across Sikkim celebrate State Day on May 16 and, thus, remain closed.
May 26 – Birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam
Banks in Tripura remain closed on May 26 to celebrate the birthday of Kazi Nazrul Isalm, a famous poet, journalist, lyricist and musician.
May 29 – Maharana Pratap Jayanti
Banks in Himachal Pradesh remain closed on May 29 on account of Maharana Pratap Jayanti, famous for his unflinching resistance against the Mughal Empire.
Nonetheless, customers can access online banking services even on bank holidays. Fund transfer requests can be made using NEFT/RTGS transfer forms, chequebook forms and demand draft request forms.
