Indian Navy Rescues 20 Crew Members from Pirated Vessel Azini in High-Seas Arabian Sea Operation

The entire 20-member crew of the Iranian fishing ship Azini has been rescued by the Indian Navy through a joint effort of a 48-hour anti-piracy operation in the Arabian Sea against well-armed Somali pirates. The anti-piracy operation came to an end on November 2, 2026, at a distance of over 3,000 kilometres from Mumbai, with assistance from the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The ship had been hijacked off the northeast coast of Somalia on October 29. The successful rescue operation ensured that none of the crew members was injured.
How the Indian Navy Executed the Rescue Operation
Following the information regarding the hijack incident, India’s Navy responded to the situation with an operational warship, INS Kolkata, that was deployed to track down the ship and stop it.
A marine reconnaissance aircraft assisted in the process of tracking down the movements of the fishing boat.
Once Azini was located, the navy used surveillance and applied non-kinetic tactics for restraining the boat’s movement and stopping the pirates from escaping.
Marine Commandos were deployed to the area with the help of a precise airdrop carried out by an IAF C-17 aircraft.
The operation was successfully conducted, resulting in the safe rescue of all 20 crew members and bringing the fishing boat under control.
Why Was the Hijacked Vessel a Security Concern?
Apart from the safety of the passengers and crew members of the hijacked ship, there were other apprehensions as well. Maritime security agencies had previously warned about the possibility of the pirates using the ship Azini as a ‘mother ship’ for carrying out their nefarious activities.
Mother ships are those vessels which have been hijacked by pirates to be used as a base from where they conduct their operations at greater distances from the shore. It would enable the pirates to move closer to the shipping lanes and capture large merchant ships.
This incident comes in the backdrop of rising piracy problems in Somalia in the western Indian Ocean.
Defence Minister Praises Navy and Air Force Coordination
The Defence Minister of India, Mr. Rajnath Singh congratulated the Indian Navy on having successfully carried out the operation and appreciated the timely support rendered by the Indian Air Force in this regard.
The Defence Minister of India stressed the ability of the force in locating, interdicting, and securing the ship despite the huge distance from India’s coastlines.
India’s Maritime Security Role in the Indian Ocean
This successful rescue operation shows the significance of coordinated naval surveillance and quick action by the navy along with coordination among the military services.
The Indian Navy has been operating anti-piracy patrols and security operations in various key maritime areas, which include the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and coastal waters of East Africa.
This mission Azini is a strong indicator of India’s response to any maritime threat in the entire Indian Ocean region.
