COVID Resurges in Asia: Health Officials Urge Caution

Asia is seeing an increase in COVID-19, so health officials are advising everyone to stay careful since most cases are not severe. In March, only 1.7% of COVID-19 tests had a result, but in May that number had increased to 11.4%, making this the highest percentage since August 2024. Severe COVID-19 cases are most often diagnosed in people who have underlying health issues. There were 14,200 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Singapore in May, up by 28% from the previous month. Daily hospital admissions have risen 30% compared to before, and health experts believe this is mainly due to decreasing immunity, not changes in the severity of COVID-19.
Chinese statistics show COVID cases are again nearing numbers seen in the last summer wave, with the country’s Center for Disease Control reporting that tests are coming back positive more than twice as often than they were before. Thailand has seen an increase in cases after the April Songkran festival, and two clusters are under monitoring by authorities. It is reported by health officials that the reduced immunity behind the surge is due to people not having had booster vaccines for over a year.
