Maharashtra FDA Suspends Blinkit Warehouse Licence and Files FIR Over Expired Food Inventory
Blinkit’s warehouse at Bhiwandi in the state of Maharashtra has been barred from conducting any food business operations by the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration after an inspection revealed serious discrepancies regarding food products which were expired, rejected and/or damaged with a market value of more than ₹32.71 lakh. The police have also filed a First Information Report against the company staff and disposal agencies.
This is in response to the inspection carried out on October 21, 2026, when the authorities realized that the warehouse was unable to provide full documentation for the disposal of 18,405 food items which were considered unfit for consumption.
Why Did Maharashtra FDA Suspend Blinkit’s Licence?
As per the FDA, the warehouse has not set up end-to-end traceability for its products that have become expired, damaged, and rejected. The agency feared that inventory meant to be destroyed may enter into the market.
The license for the operation of the facility was immediately revoked by the regulator on grounds that there was a risk to public health. The revocation is applicable only to the warehouse and does not mean that Blinkit’s business operations have been stopped in India.
The investigators are looking into whether the disposal process was followed in accordance with regulations and whether the absence of records indicates any diversion of food products.
FIR Names Company Personnel and Disposal Contractors
On receipt of a complaint by the FDA, FIRs were filed against various people, including a full-time director of Blink Commerce Private Limited, scrap warehouse operations staff and scrap vendors, at the Bhiwandi Taluka Police Station.
The case pertains to provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, in regard to cheating and criminal conspiracy and Section 59(i) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
These pertain to the suspected non-conformity with regard to destruction of food products that are unsuitable for human consumption. Any diversion of products from the destruction process is also being investigated.
Filing of FIRs does not amount to determination of guilt. These allegations will have to be proved through investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
Wider Crackdown on Expired Food Products
The case against the Bhiwandi facility owned by Blinkit is just one of the many FDA measures in Maharashtra aimed at warehouses, disposal firms and retailers accused of mishandling food products which had expired.
Inspection carried out in Thane and Pune had led to the confiscation of food products worth about ₹48.09 lakh. Licenses were revoked from five warehouses of Blinkit, Reliance and Zomato Hyperpure, while some others without licenses were directed to shut down.

The case underlines the significance of adequate inventory control, record-keeping for safe disposal and adherence to food safety laws in the quick-commerce sector.
Consumers must inspect products for their expiry date before consumption and report any irregularity observed to the concerned food safety authorities.
For an online grocery delivery platform, it is crucial to have systems in place that allow segregation of the products after their expiry dates and confirmation of their disposal.
The outcome of the investigation may reveal whether the alleged violations were due to some lapses in process or intentional misappropriation of these products.
