Ayush Shetty Wins US Open 2025, Tanvi Sharma Runner-Up

India has a reason to cheer on the BWF circuit again! Ayush Shetty registered a remarkable win to become the US Open Super 300 champion, the first of his career on the BWF World Tour, defeating Canada’s Brian Yang in straight sets in the final. Meanwhile, at just 16, Tanvi Sharma shone bright, having made the final in the women’s singles and finishing runner-up. Shetty, who previously won a bronze medal at the 2023 World Junior Championships, showed great calmness and power during his match in the men’s singles final, beating Canada’s no. 3 seed Yang 21-18, 21-13 in a definitive 47 minutes; this win also marked the end of India’s BWF title drought for the year, and confirmed Shetty’s growing stature in world badminton.
His run to the title was especially impressive and included a remarkable comeback in the semi-finals against former world no. 2 Chou Tien Chen. The Mangalore-born player had beaten Yang twice already this year so was on a roll when it came to a crucial final.

Tanvi Sharma’s Grit Wins Hearts
In her very first BWF World Tour final on the women’s side, unseeded Tanvi Sharma fought hard against top-seed and world no. 10 Beiwen Zhang of the USA. Despite a final score of 11-21, 21-16, and 10-21 to Zhang, Sharma expressed so much maturity in her game that she earned admirers around the badminton world. It was in the second game that Sharma showed her great fight. In fact, Sharma rallied back in the second game with some powerful rallies and lightning quick plays at the net and eventually leveled the match. Given Zhang’s experience, the decision resulted in Zhang prevailing.
Nonetheless, Sharma’s effort in the final is a great indicator of what we can look forward to in the future for women’s badminton in India. At only 16 years of age, she already plays with great fearlessness and is one of the most exciting young stars to follow. With Shetty’s first major international title and Tanvi’s memorable performance, the US Open 2025 will be remembered fondly by Indian badminton fans.
