Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Says AWS Capacity Sold Out Through 2027: What It Means for Cloud Tech

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is experiencing a surge in demand for computing infrastructure amid the booming development of artificial intelligence across the globe. It has been revealed by Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy that AWS’ cloud capacity for the year 2026 is all sold out; major portions of its cloud capacity for the year 2027 are already committed and much of the capacity for the year 2028 is committed too.
On a video podcast conducted by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, Jassy stated that the demand for AWS’ computing infrastructure is rising at a pace that AWS cannot keep up with.
AI Demand Pushes AWS Capacity to Its Limits
This is due to the rise in the use of AI in the software development process by businesses, customer support, data analysis, and workflows automation. In addition, AI developers also need a lot of computing power in order to build models and satisfy millions of user queries.
According to Jassy, AWS still reserves some amount of capacity for on-demand customers and services such as EC2 and Bedrock, which means that not all AWS services are out of use. Thus, this is more about allocating large chunks of computing capacity towards existing and upcoming customer needs.
Amazon Plans Massive Infrastructure Investment
For 2026, Amazon has estimated the capital expenditure at around $220 billion, which is indicative of the massive investment made by the firm in data centers, servers, network and AI infrastructure.
Even then, there are certain limitations faced by the firm due to limited data center space, energy and special memory for AI processors. Expansion of the cloud is not just about buying the chips but also getting the power, setting up facilities and the infrastructure to run them.
Jassy has also said that Amazon can spend even more to meet customers’ demands. These remarks clearly show how much importance is being given by the firm to AI infrastructure.
What Does This Mean for Cloud Customers?
This potential problem could impact companies that wish to use artificial intelligence on a larger scale. Businesses that have an urgent need for more computing power would be required to book their capacity in advance, or even use other configurations and split their workload between several cloud services.
Startups might face even more issues if they rely on powerful processors for model training and operating of AI-based solutions. However, it would depend on the workload, location, processor needs and particular AWS service.
Companies would also pay attention to optimizing the work of AI models and minimizing their computing needs.
Can Amazon Make AI More Affordable?
In addition to increasing capacity, Amazon is also designing its own AI chips called Trainium for greater efficiency in computing and lower operating expenses. According to Jassy, “AI inference the process by which models make their responses will need to get much cheaper.”
Greater efficiency in hardware and software may enable AWS to accommodate more customers without having to increase its infrastructure expenses accordingly.
What Lies Ahead for Cloud Computing?
The comments from Jassy show how big an infrastructure problem there is for the AI industry. There is demand, but data centers, power supply, and sophisticated computer systems cannot be built quickly.
In terms of Amazon, the company must focus on capacity expansion and make sure that infrastructure investments pay off in the long term. As for the customers, access to computing resources and cost management will matter more and more in light of further development of AI.
The point here is very obvious: the next stage of the AI battle will be determined not only by smarter models, but also by sufficient infrastructure capable of running them.
