Aadhaar Biometric Verification Made Mandatory for Subsidised LPG Refills Starting October 1
A fresh rule based on Aadhaar is expected to impact LPG customers within India from October 1, 2026. As per the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, LPG customers must go through Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) for booking domestic LPG cylinders at the retail selling price with applicable subsidy.
This is not to say that those who do not authenticate themselves using biometrics will not get any LPG. Rather, the major issue with non-authentication revolves around the subsidy. While those who do not authenticate themselves may still get LPG, they will not get any subsidy.
What is the New LPG Aadhaar Rule?
From 1st October, all those domestic LPG consumers, who wish to continue getting their cylinders refilled at the subsidised price, need to undergo Biometric Aadhaar Authentication.
As per the government, the move is aimed at ensuring that the subsidised LPG actually goes to its deserving destinations.
The process is designed to link the LPG account with an Aadhaar-authenticated consumer. As per the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, this would help avoid misuse of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial purposes or identifying the duplicate or ineligible connections.
Who Needs to Complete Aadhaar Authentication?
This rule is for domestic LPG consumers who haven’t gone through the process of Biometric Aadhaar Authentication and wish to get the subsidy scheme continued for their refills.
But those consumers who have completed the process of authentication do not have to go through this process again. According to reports, by September 19, 2026, the government had reported that 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, which is about 89.9% of total, had completed the process of BAA.
Those consumers who haven’t done it still have time until October 1.
What Happens If You Do Not Complete It?
Your LPG connection will not get disconnected in case you fail to go through the process of biometric authentication. The government has made it clear that you will still be able to receive your LPG. The only thing is that the benefit of subsidy cannot be provided unless the process of authentication is done.
The consumers who do not wish to go through the BAA process can also register their wish via the portal or app of the oil marketing company. They will be able to receive the LPG at the market price available with the company.

There are various ways for you to go through this process. You can easily complete the process of authentication after receiving the LPG cylinder. The delivery person will be able to help you to complete the process through his mobile app of the oil marketing company.
You can also go to the showroom of your LPG distributor to complete the process.
Can You Complete It Through a Mobile App?
Yes. Customers can authenticate themselves using the official mobile application of the respective oil marketing company.
Indane customers can authenticate themselves using IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers can authenticate themselves using HP PAY. The government has also specified that video tutorials for the same are
available on the PMUY website.
Consumers must only use the official applications and channels for authentication and must never share their Aadhaar details, OTP or any other information with unknown persons and/or websites.
Why Has the Government Introduced Such a Scheme?
As per the government, the key purpose behind introducing such a scheme is the requirement to ensure that the distribution of LPG subsidy is done in an effective manner. It would enable the identification of duplicate and ineligible connections as well as avoid subsidised domestic LPG from being used for commercial or industrial uses.
It must be mentioned here that according to the government, the objective of this process is not to stop any eligible households from getting LPG.
What Should LPG Consumers Do Before October 1?
Consumers who have already gone through Biometric Aadhaar Authentication don’t have to do anything further. They will continue their refills under the current subsidised scheme.
Those who haven’t completed their authentication should know their standing with regard to the same from their LPG supplier and get it done through their delivery agent, distributor showroom or via the official OMC mobile app. This could help them book their next subsidised refill without any problems before October 1.
Why This is Important to Households
If a household relies on LPG subsidy, it becomes important to know whether it is able to distinguish between regulated price with subsidy and current market price of the fuel. It becomes more pertinent for those consumers who haven’t yet got themselves authenticated.
According to the government, most of the active users of LPG have already undergone the authentication process, although millions haven’t. It is therefore a short time left for them to get authenticated in order to continue enjoying subsidy.
