Congress’s victory in Himachal Pradesh was a surprise win. The party continued its hold in Arki and Fatehpur and a new presence with winning Jubbal-Kotkhai, along with Mandi. The party was battling BJP for two seats in the state. Big win is being hailed as Jubbal-Kotkhai seat that was earlier with BJP. BJP lost the seat after last-minute move to withhold ticket from Chetan Singh Bragta, the son of sitting MLA Narinder Singh Bragta.
Bragta’s death had pushed the election as necessary. Upset, Chetan Singh Bragta contested as an Independent, dividing the anti-BJP votes and pushing the win in favor of Congress. Senior Congress leader Randeep Surjewala tweeted: “BJP has lost 2 out of 3 Lok Sabha seats. In Assemblies, BJP has lost at most places in direct contest with INC. HP, Raj., Karnataka & Maharashtra have witnessed it. Modi ji, Shed arrogance! Repeal 3 Black Laws! Stop Petrol-Diesel-Gas Loot! Disdain for people’s pain is harmful.”
In Karnataka, Congress’ Srinivas Hane won Hangal seat over BJP’s Shivaraj Sajjanar by a margin of more than 7000 votes – quite a shock for BJP. Hangal is widely taken as CM Basavaraj Bommai’s backyard and thus was thought to come through for BJP. Chief Minister Bommai said taking Congress victory as a setback to him, “Elections are won and lost… these by-elections are fought on particular time and issues, and its outcome is not a complete verdict. However, I have taken this election setback very seriously and we will do all the corrections.”
The saffron party and its allies registered a sweeping win across all north-east states. In Assam, the ruling BJP and its ally have won all the five Assembly constituencies of Gossaigaon, Tamulpur, Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra.
In Bihar, the ruling JD(U) has retained both Tarapur and Kusheshwar Asthan seats. In Rajasthan, Congress’ Nagraj Meena and Preeti Shaktawat won Dhariawad and Vallabhnagar assembly constituencies with votes margins of 18,725 and 20,606, respectively. Before the bypolls, the Dhariawad seat under BJP and Vallabhnagar was a Congress seat.
Hailing victories against BJP, Rahul Gandhi of Congress tweeted, “Every victory for the Congress is a victory of our party worker. Keep fighting hate. No fear!”
The ruling Trinamool Congress has registered win against its rivals by an astounding margin, taking home a 4-0 clean sweep. The TMC battled for the Dinhata and Santipur seats in Coochbehar and Nadia districts respectively, raising its tally to 215 in the 294-member assembly in West Bengal.
