Goa -Mamata Banerjee’s fan following has led tennis players and film stars to join her party, reports confirm. In the presence of this party supremo, Leander Paes has joined Trinamool Congress from Goa ahead of the 2022 elections. This marks his first move into politics.
Welcoming Paes in the party, Banerjee called the former Indian Tennis player her ‘younger brother’, adding that she knew him since he was a youth minister.
Also joining her recently has been Bollywood actress Nafisa Ali and Mrinalini Deshprabhu last week. This is a big move for the party which is looking at taking BJP by its horns in the forthcoming Goa elections. On its part, Aam Aadmi Party’s main leader, Arwind Kejriwal has already promised big changes in Goa, if he comes to power.
Goa has been troubled over unemployment, Centre control over mining, and therefore great loss of tourism in the last few months. Covid-19 created issues continue to persist as well.
The Goa assembly has a strength of 40 members. Currently, the ruling BJP-led NDA has 27 MLAs in the Goa assembly with support from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Vijay Sardesai of the Goa Forward Party (GFP), and three independents.
The National convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Kejriwal has a seven-point scheme in employment to offer. He has ensured 80 percent of jobs if elected in the coastal area. This includes the private sector representation too for the locals. Referring to the mining benefits and jobs that might be allocated to those outside of the coastal state, he reassured everyone that this will not happen. His seven-point scheme promises, one job per unemployed family, a minimum wage of Rs. 3000, Rs. 5000 worth of jobs for those affected by the mining ban and due to Covid tourism loss, skill university formation, etc.
