Karnataka Congress MLA apologises over shocking “enjoy rape” statement
Karnataka – On Thursday, a senior Congress leader in Karnataka issued an apology hours after his “enjoy rape” remark in the state Assembly triggered massive criticism and outrage. MLA K. R. Ramesh Kumar apologized for his “indifferent and negligent” comment, but controversially called it an “off the cuff remark” in his apology clarifying the statement. “My intention was not trivialise or make light of the heinous crime, but an off-the-cuff remark! I will choose my words carefully henceforth!” Congress MLA K. R. Ramesh Kumar said last night in a tweet.
MLA Kumar had made the outrageous statement during a discussion in the Karnataka State Assembly on farmers issues. When the Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri asked how to conduct the session if time is allotted to everyone. Speaker had asked, “Whatever you decide – I will say yes. What I am thinking is that let us enjoy the situation. I can’t control or regulate the system. My concern is about the business of the house, it has also to be covered.” To this MLA K. R. Ramesh Kumar commented, “There is a saying that when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That is exactly the position which you are in.”
The other unfortunate part of the incident was that all other leaders present laughed out in response.
The comment by the MLA had attracted huge criticism. “The comment is obnoxious and outright disgraceful. He is a serial offender while he was the Speaker of the Assembly he had made a similar comment. Now again, he has repeated it. The Congress, which has always claimed it is there for women’s safety and security, must immediately initiate action against this serial offender,” BJP leader S Prakash remarked.
Even the Congress party leaders have lashed out at the MLA for his extremely demeaning comment. “Congress Party disapproves the exchange of highly objectionable & insensitive banter between Karnataka Assembly Speaker & Sr. Congress MLA in the House,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted.
MLA Ramesh Kumar apologized in a tweet, “I would like to express my sincere apologies to everyone for the indifferent and negligent comment I made in today’s assembly about “Rape!” My intention was not trivialise or make light of the heinous crime, but an off-the-cuff remark! I will choose my words carefully henceforth!”
The apology by Congress leader has been backed by the Speaker, who too was seen laughing at the controversial comment in the Assembly. “He has apologized, let’s not drag it further.”
