Tesla to Open Its First Showroom in Mumbai’s BKC: A Step Closer to India Launch

Tesla, the US electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is ready to open its first showroom in India. The company has sealed an agreement to launch a 4,000 sq ft showroom in Mumbai’s elite Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This marks Tesla’s increasing presence in India as it prepares to unveil its car models in one of the costliest commercial areas of the city. Tesla is shelling out a whopping rent of Rs 900 per square meter, which totals approximately Rs 35 lakh a month. The duration of the lease is five years.
This comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk had a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, marking the company’s intent to enter the Indian market. After the meeting, Tesla posted 13 job vacancies in India, suggesting that the launch is coming soon.
Aside from the Mumbai showroom, Tesla is set to open a new showroom in the Aerocity area of Delhi. While Tesla has been looking at India for years, this new push is a significant advance. The company had earlier announced that it would enter India in 2022, but the launch was postponed. With the new lease agreement, Tesla’s entry into India now appears to be inevitable.
Tesla can import vehicles from Berlin in the first phase and is considering the option of local manufacturing in India. This strategic step is likely to provide Tesla with a strong base as it aims to have a strong foothold in one of the fastest-growing electric vehicle markets.
